How to find your Ancestor
The research on my line continues.. As most of you know I descend from the line of Casper Rader who died in Wytheville, VA in 1812. My efforts to discover his origin have taught me several lessons that you can use in your work.
1. Don't assume that the name and spelling you have been given is correct. As I said his name, on the head stone, was Casper Rader but when you look at page 4 you will see that the spelling varied considerably. His probated will, in the basement at the Wythe County court house, spells his name Casper Roeter. So as you look for your ancestor expand the spelling to include any spelling that would sound like what you think the name is !
2. Don't believe what you have heard about his previous residence. I was told that he came from Lancaster county, PA. The bill of sale for the Cumberland County land says, "Gasper Rheder of Wythe County, VA". The deed from the purchase of the same land says, "Gasper Reader of East Pensborrough township, Cumberland Co., PA buys this land". He was in that county for at least 20 years before he went to Virginia ! |

More German
Another Researcher in Germany who has been working on Raders for years, I think ? His letter is enclosed, in German, and my translation is also enclosed.
He also enclosed a list of Rötter data in German. Can you improve my translation ? What is a "Priest book" were these people ORDAINED as Priests ? What religion ?
I have responded with a draft for 40 marks. We will see what he returns.
Where to look next
The census records in this issue complement those in issue # 8. Don't take the spelling of the surname too seriously. Those old hand written records are very hard to read. The peopls writing them were not very particular in their spelling of names either. |

After years of the king telling them what to do the immigrants were not very trusting of government, they preferred to be left alone. If the government missed them on got their name wrong that was just fine with them. Maybe they might forget to collect taxes also. |

Casper Rötter in Virginia
He moved to south-western Virginia
Casper and his family moved to Montgomery County, Virginia
At a Court held for Montgomery County the first day of July 1788 "Ordered that Gasper Reeder be exempted from paying taxes for his blind horse." (Court Order Bk. 1, pg 322)
Casper Reader purchased 200 acres at the "Cove" from Samuel Montgomery 1 AUG 1789. This deed is recorded in Deed Book "B" pg 16.
Gasper Reeder purchased 100 acres January 1791, waters of Reed Creek, Walter Crocket line, on a land office treasury warrant for 1,500 acres.
The Treasury warrants were issued by the state in order for a settler to have authority to "enter" his request for a survey, which was in turn filed with the state, which eventually was approved and a grant issued. The 1500 acres on the tresury warrant does not mean that any one man obtained that much land, only the right to take it up, or to sell the rights that he did not use himself.
William Reader bought 100 acres on Big Walker's Creek.
There are land surveys recorded for:
Henry Rader - 33 acres 19 APR 1790 Plat Book "E" pg 36
Conrad Rader - 24 Acres 27 MAR 1790 Plat Book "E" pg 34
Coonrad Rader - 27 acres #9; 6 APR 1790 Plat Book "E" pg 35
Stephen Reeader purchased land from Joseph Erwin- 122 acres 5 AUG 1788 Deed Book "A" pg 538 (not listed on will, was Stephen a child of Casper ?)
Wythe County Virginia, A Bicentennial History by Mary B. Kegley
The following is from page 217
The fourth German congregation to be organized in Wythe County was St.John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, which met north of the county seat, probably as early as 1798. At that date, the Reverend Bernhard Willy, serving the Reformed congregations, and probably primarily St. Paul, drew up an agreement dated May 30, 1798, in which St. Paul, Kimberling, St. Mark's in present Smyth County, and St. John's near Wytheville agreed to follow the eleven points set forth in the document in regard to election of elders and deacons, baptism, communion, confirmation, cemetery regulations, and pastors' responsibilities. The churches were identified at this time as "the congregation near town," the "old" church, the "new" church, and the church on the Holston. Those officials who signed the agreement were Jacob Brunner, John Peter Jantz [Yonce], Casper Rather [Rader], George Armbrister, Jacob Kinzer, George Wambler [Wampler], Henry Hoppes, George Wambler, Jr., Adam Dottinger [Dutton], George Weber [Weaver], John Schnebely [Snaveley], and Philipp Aker.(40)
The St. John's congregation first met on Daniel Etter's land. In 1800, Etter and his wife Mary conveyed one acre to Casper Rader and George Armbrister, elders of the German Lutheran Congregation, the "members of which live near Wythe Court House," and to "Peter Yantz [Yonce] and Jacob Prooner, elders of the German Reformed Congregation, the members of which also reside in the same area," both congregations "having had a place of worship hitherto on sd. Etter's land.'' The two congregations were to have the use of a nearby spring.(4l)
A list of subscribers for the building of the church was dated the same year. Sixty local residents gave a total of $201.50 [allowing for conversion of shillings and pence into dollars at the rate of 9 shillings = $1.50]. The families included on the list included Armbrister, Brown, Brunner [Pruner], Pinkley, Cassell, Clemens, Davies, Etter, Felty, Kegley, Harkrader, Hutzel, Lenhart [Leonard], Losser, Mayers, Messersmith, Murphy, Mosser, Poff, Rader, Repass, Riegel, Schaffer, Sharitz, Saftly, Syfer, Umberger, Foglesong, Wyrick, Wiseley, Wetzel, Wohlford, and Zimmerman [Simmerman]. The present church was built in 1854 and has been recognized by the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission.4

Casper is buried in the St. Johns lutheran church cemetery the date on his tombstone is one of those that is not correct. His inscription was "CASPER RADER died July 16, 1811 in his 80 th year. (his will was signed 18 May 1812) It was probated 11 August 1812.
His wife's headstone read "RACHEL RADER consort of Casper Rader died Oct. 31 1816 in her 70 th year
Some Questions ?????
1. Is it possable that Casper's wife Regina died and he remaried a Rachel ?
2. Is it reasonable that Casper purchased land back in Hanover twp, Lebanon co in 1775 from his father-in-law while he is paying mortgage payments in Cumberland Co ???
3. The French & Indian War began in 1756 and the Revolutionary war soon after. It is reasonable that some of their family, friends and relatives fought and died in those wars. Next quarter I hope to focus on those wars, If you have any Rader records from those wars please share them with me. Or better yet why don't you write an article for the next newsletter.
Also submit Queries about your ancestors and I will include all that will fit!

Sehr geehrter Her Rader

²The formats on these databases are a combination of many different formats due to the many different databases that were created over a period of many years by Accelerated Indexing System International. Automated Archives Inc., has tried to standardize the formats as much as practical. Note that none of the databases contain entries in every field. Every field that was listed in the origianal record has been preserved. Township Field: Many records have no listing for the township, but that can be derived from the page number listed. If you refer to the Census Schedule for the county referred to, the townships will be listed and will show you the page number that they start on. Notes Field: Many records have a series of numbers within the notes field. The meaning of these numbers is as follows.
Example: 01010 - 02210 - 06
(males 5 digits)-
(females 5 digits)-
(free negros/indians 1 digit) (total number in household)
(Slaves 1 or 2 digits) (total number in household
5 Digits breakdown as follows
1st digit - number in household age 10 & under
2nd digit - number in household age 11-15
3rd digit - number in household age 16-20
4th digit - number in household age 21-45
5th digit - number in household age 46+
The example would break down as follows
1 male age 11-15
1 male age 21-45
2 females ages 11-15
2 females ages 16-20
1 female age 21-45
6 slaves

Have you been looking at those advertisements for Genealogy data on CD_ROM ? I went beyond looking and joined GENESYS, added a CD ROM reader to my computer, and started extracting data.
I decided to start through their United States Census Index. The following is from "CD 138 and CD 151" It is their attempt to cover the whole country. As you can see it is not very complete, but it is the best available to date.
The notation in the search "R?D?R" the "?" tells the computer to look for any single character in that location. So it will include any name that begins with an "R" and ends with an "R", is 5 characters long and has a "D" in the third position.
