Where did the Raders come from ?

Dr. William Rader, in his book The Descendants of ADAM AND ANN MARIA RÖDER, JOHANN ADAM AND KATHARINA (TAUBER) RÖDER documents the origin of that line of Raders. They came from Mutterstadt in the 1720's. This area is just a few miles south west of Mannheim near the Rhine River. And of course the Rhine is the highway to Rotterdam where on would catch a ship to the Colonies. Nearby Ludwigshaven is 572 km up the Rhine from Rotterdam.

The documentation in this and previous issues prove that the line of Conrad Röder came from Driedorf which is between Frankfurt and Bonn. This is not on the Rhein it is about 50 KM north west of the river across several mountain ranges. This is in the Westerwald region. Koblenz is the nearest major river town and is 408 km up the Rhine from Rotterdam.

We don't where Casper Rötter (Rader) (1732-1812) was from. We do know that the Etters, who his sons married, came from the Fribourg Canton of Switzerland in the 1730's. This is on Lake Neuchreel about 200 km from Lake Constance. Lake Constance is at the head of the Rhine 1000 km from Rotterdam.

Page 4 and 5 translate to the following:

I Conrad Röder was born 13 March 1751 in the place Driedorf between Nassau and Dillenburg

(Bill's Note I have slightly changed the names of two locations to correspond to current spellings that I believe are what was meant. On the copy of the actual Bible page Nassau does show the double s although this was not used when it was typed. The places are relatively small villages east and slightly north of Koblenz. This is obviously not word for word translation but it is in my opinion the meaning in english)

My Grandfather was called Anton Röder. My father was Hennerich Anton Röder, the mother Christina Röder.

(Bill's Note I believe this should be Heinrich. It is not clear whether she is Conrad's mother or grandmother. Note also the spelling of the month Mirz. This is an old way of spelling Marz - or March. As for the word ten there is no such word in the German language. I think it likely that it should be tun, the infinitive form of the verb to do, put or make; for the old script letters e and u are fairly easy to be mistaken for each other.)

So much for myself Conrad Röder

              Conrad Röder

Blessing of the church to all

(Bill's Note I believe the last line to be an idiom expression that has no direct translation - and I have tried to come up with what I believe to be as close as I can do)

My Baptismal sponsor was

Conrad Röder of Jutersdorf

confirmed in the 15th year of the

Christian preacher in Driedorf

(Bill's Note I believe this was written by a person different from Conrad Röder. The writing seems to be slightly different. I also think it is Guntersdorf rather than Juntersdorf although I can't find either one on the map. Obviously it would have been clearer if they had written with a sharper quill/pen in a better hand. After saying that - now for some speculation. The word following Christian is certainly not clear but I think the ending of the word may be ..getan rather than ..geter. This lets us assume the word to be Hinzugetan which can be translated as consulting or part time - or in the words of a preacher who was not there on a full time basis. )

Bill Etter's second translation task, Thanks again bill for the hard work

To Honorable Authorities a respectful request by Wilhelm Aston Röder of Driedorf for a petition to travel to America

                                                                                                28 April 1789

I was from birth until 15 in poverty, for my mother was without skill, and had only a bare income from her manual labor together with careful spending and help from friends. I am now of age - but I do not have the training to learn a trade/craft - so my future and well being, it can be seen, will be difficult without help that is now beyond me. I am for that reason of a mind to accept an opportunity to move to America. where by God's grace my luck will improve, for I have in that place a close relative, and therefore my situation is known. To resolve my deplorable condition my first need to be considered is for travel money, but neither I nor any member of my mother's immediate family is able to provide such a gift. I now must appeal to sovereign authority.

I respectfully submit to your majesty, a request for gracious assistance for travel money.

Submitted

            (footnote)

The applicant is an illegitimate son of a country millers daughter, has no skills and as far as can be seen therefore his best future would be as a servant. His mother's brother went to America has established himself as a miller and according to a letter to the applicant that when he comes to him he will be provided for. Such a favorable situation he does not have here and the public will not loose by his going. It is recommended to your Highness that he be given 6 Gilden if it should so please you so that he may travel to Amsterdam in order to reach the water. The remaining cost of travel by boat will be provided by his mother's brother.

Bill Etter's thoughts

Now my thoughts: It seems to me that some points can be deduced from the nature and contents of the application.

1) Wilhelm is likely to be still a teenager or in his early 20's

2) His mother is almost certainly dead as well as her parents.

3) Wilhelm's father may never be known but by todays practice Wilhelm is not a Röder.

I did not print the german version of this letter. This translation was done by Herbert Rader himself.

                                                                                    8 Feb. 1938

We thank you for your letter of the 24th UH the contents of which interests us. We can to begin with inform you that the recording in your family bible points toward about 850 inhabitants in the surrounding community of Driedorf in former Nassau Dillenburg. In our list appears NO Adam Röder, however we do find Jacob, Martin Christoph, and Johan Engel Röder (included among those mentioned in your emigration dates) also a Conrad Röder who landed in Philadelphia in 1772.

The place and time of Conrad Röders birth evidently established the further search concerning your ancestors will not be particularly difficult. We shall be pleased (prepared) to undertake same. Next, however we have to inform you that the church registrars in general assemble only documents concerning birth and baptism, marriage and death and that every such document without postage costs .25. Information in other than documentary form to be assembled, the church registrars are not obligated even so little as unremunerated search in their church books. It therefore becomes necessary that you send us at the most an advance of $10.00 which we will later adjust with you.

We look forward with interest to your further information (instructions)

I found this document in the Schwankfelter Library (June 1992) I think it is vintage 1950, possibly from the work of Mr Fetterman ??. The copy was very poor. The typing appeared to be one of the later carbon copies. I found that "o", "e", "a" and "u" were very difficult to distinguish. The descenders were not on some letters ?

Have you seen this document ?

Can you correct or verify any of it ?

Historical and Biographical Sketch of the

Roder, roeder, rother, rotter, rutter, rudder, rutter and Ruther Family

Origin

There are several theories as to the origin of the distinguished name of Roeder, with its variant forms. By some it is said to be a shortened form of the surname Roderick, meaning famous ruler, which finds its root in the old German (h)rod, meaning fame, glory or victory. According to another theory, the surname means a reuter or trooper, coming from the Dutch ruiter, meaning trooper, but which has nothing to do with the German reiten, meaning ride. Heinze-Cascorbi, the famous German authority on etymology of surnames, is of the opinion that Roeder and its variants came from the German reuten or roden, meaning plough, from which is derived the occupational name signifying one who is engaged in agriculture. An early representative of this name was Conrad Rodorer, who lived in Bargheim in 1300.

The differences in the spelling of the surname should be ignored for two reasons. In the first place, spelling was precarious in the 18th century. Men signed their names with different spellings on different occasions, or a clerk frequently spelled the name as he heard it pronounced rather than to be bothered with asking how to spell it. The other reason is that the census records which follow were printed 125 years after they were written, so the paper and ink had faded, fine strokes of the pen had worn away as the pages rubbed against each other in use, and the clerks, expert as they were in reading old documents, occasionally erred in interpreting the handwriting.

Early in the 18th Century many inhabitants of the Lower Palatinate lying on both sides of the Rhine in Germany were driven from their homes by the persecution of Louis XIV of France, whose crimes desolated their country. Many of these fugitives went to England and some were bound for America.

Shiploads of German people left for America during the years 1709-1712. As most of these people came from Rhenish or Palatine, the name "Palatine" was applied indiscriminately to all of these immigrants, although some came from neighboring territories as well. Walter Knittle in his book "Early Palatine Emigration", lists the following bearing the Roeder, Ruter etc. surname, who came to this country and landed in New York: Hans Peter Rohter, wife and child.

At the courthouse in Philadelphia on the following dates there were recorded lists of Palatines who with their families were imported on various ships, among them representatives of this family as follows:

Sept. 9, 1747 Ship "Restauration", James Hall, Master Jacob Roder

Sept. 14, 1753          Ship "Edinberg", James Russell, Master Henry Rother

Sept. 30, 1774          Ship "Union", Andrew Bryson, Master John George Rutter

These Palatines did on the dates above mentioned, take the usual oaths and qualifications to the Government. From 1747 until the end of the American Revolution, there are records of colonial pioneers bearing the Roeder, Rotter etc. surname. There are records of Conrad, Johan Engel, Martin Christofel, Cathrina, Johan Casper and Johannes.

Families bearing the surname of Roeder, Rotter etc. are found at early dates in our colonial and Revolutionary War history. The following is a partial list of Roeder, Rotter progenitors taken from the records of early American History, some served in our continental Army. For a more detailed list see such works as "Pennsylvania Archives", etc. The names are as follows: Johathan, Martin, Michael and Solomon Roder; Adam, Conrad, George, Jacob, John, Martin, Michael and Peter Roeder; Christopher Roeder; Andrew, Job and Thomas Rotter; and Alexander, Barbara, Benjamin, Casper, Catherine, Edmond, Francis, George, Henry, Israel, Jacob, James, John, Joseph, Matt's, Paul, Peter, Samuel, Simon, Thomas, Widow and Wm. Rutter.

The progeny of the various branches of the family in America have removed to many parts of the United States and have contributed substantially to the furtherance of American civilization.             1161 Reeder Bohrer - Borah - Borer (1720-1965) by Camden Borah Meyer

Page 1-10 discloses that Peter Bohrer was on the ship "EDINBURG" on the same voyage as my CASPER ROTTER. It further states that there were many Huguenots on that ship with him and that "Memorials of the Huguenots in America" has details.

Yes I checked, they do rent that book also

Page 417- 429 gives many details of the colonial life of this immigrant and lists others not related to this line of Bohrer's

2499 Rader Our Baker Family - This book has only one Rader, Bess Belle Rader (1/20/1895- 9/4/1928) wife of Mott Raymont Rickets. The immigrant in this book settled in Lancaster PA in the 1740's

2518 Reeder Three Centuries with the Rosenberger-Rosenberry Family 1698-1983

The 30 page introduction to this book contains many maps and details of early colonial pennsylvania in the are of Harrisburg. The only REEDER references are to people who purchased items at estate sales.
