Pioneers and Patriots "Over the Blue Mountain"

One Man's Price for Freedom

From the vantage of our lifestyles it is difficult to imagine the hard ships that each of these people, and their families, had to endure to gain the freedoms that we know.

Accounts of some of the journeys survive today, which give details of the daily events during the months that it took for some to make the journey to America. Also some journals of early Colonial life have survived the years. Each person had their own story; bites of major events of one man's life survive in preserved Civil Records.

On 3 December 1772 ship Sally arrived at the Port of Philadelphia from Rotterdam via Portsmouth, England. Aboard was Conrad Roder, who had taken what we might now call a "Sail now - Pay later journey to America.

He was "sold" the same day for his debt of 17 Pounds, 3 Shillings to Sebastian Keeley of Vincent Township, Chester County. Under an indenture, Conrad was obligated to work for a period of three years for Keeley.

There were about 50 or so "Redemptioners" who arrived with him on that ship. His signature is on the list of persons who "did this day take the oath and Qualifications.."

On 15 August 1832 Con Roder, age 81, of Wayne Township, Schuylkill County, appeared before George Rausch and Daniel Yost, Associate Judges of the court of Common Pleas of Schuylkill. Conrad made a declaration in application for a Pension under an Act of Congress passed 7 June 1832.

In that declaration he stated that he was born in Europe, migrated to America at twenty years old in 1772, and that his age was recorded in his family Bible. Also he stated that he enlisted as a soldier in the army of the United States in 1776 under Captain Hettering in Windsor Township, Chester County.

He also stated that he was at Fort Lee, Amboy, and Fort Washington. At the latter place he was taken prisoner, and held for eight weeks at Bridewell Prision.

After release from prision, he returned to Chester County where he again enlisted in the spring of 1777, for one year. During that year he was at Trenton, Amboy, White Plains, Valley Forge and Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth Meeting house.

He returned to Chester County at the end of his service and remained there for four years, after which he moved to Berks and Schuylkill Counties.

He was on the Revolutionary Roll for Pennsylvania, and was paid a Pension of $60 per year, beginning 4 March 1831. A certificate of Pension was issued on 2 May 1833 and sent to him at Orwigsberg. That payment covered an arrears of $120.00, plus a semi-annual payment through September 4, 1833 of $30.00.

His claim was recorded in Book E, Volume 5, page 48. Philip Moyer, a clergyman, and Frederick Hesse, identified as a credible person, had countersigned Conrad's declaration.

Conrad is buried at Summer Hill Cemertery, his tombstone indicates that he was born 13 May 1751, died 6 August 1834. His wife, Magdalena was born 23 Jun 1753; died 12 Feb 1831. His will is recorded at Schulkill County in Book 1; page 180 through 182. The will was dated 26 April 1823, and Recorded 29 August 1834. I t had been witnessed by Henry Krebs and Jacob Krebs.

The executors of his estate were two of his children, Catherine and Conrad. In addition to his wife Magdalena, the will mentions his sons Conrad and Caspar, his daughter Catherine, and Johannes and Anthony, likely sons of his daughter Catherine. [ Anthony had died before Conrad.]

A death notice appeared in "Die Stimme Des Volks and Allemanger", a german language newspaper printed at Orwigsburg: "Conrad Roeder, Wayne Township, August 6, 84 years"

Subject: Re: Roll Call? From: "Bob Collier" <bcollier@ipa.net>

In response to the the suggestion for a roll call, I am submitting my only

Rader, who is my great Grandmother. Family records say she came from

Germany although I wonder if it could not have been Switzerland. They lived

in Zurich, Hay Township, Ontario, Canada. It appears they later immigrated

to the U.S. and settled in the Kansas area sometime between 1875 and 1885.

I have no dates for Elizabeth Rader Hamacher, but her husband, John Emery

Hamacher was born about 1848. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Subject: Re: Etters From: Alyce & Mike <the.lundbergs@worldnet.att.net>

I've listed my Etters starting with Sarah Ann (Sally) Rader Etter

below. I had sent a copy of the list to a cousin who also descends

from Sally's son, Martin, for her to verify. Haven't heard back yet,

but when I do, I'll let you know of any corrections.

I have visited your web site many times and think it is wonderful

that you are sharing your information. One thing I noticed, you

have Daniel Etter and Mary Magdalen Rein (Disputed) as the parents

of Mary Etter, wife of John Rader. In Bill Etter's manuscript _New

Horizons--An Etter Story_ he says "Daniel, one of the three brothers

[of Gerhart Etter] to come to Wythe county is also the subject of

much confusion by several researchers. He was married to a Mary

Magdalen ( ). Her surname has not been identified. (This is not

the Daniel Etter who married Maria Magdalena Rein on 25 April 1781

at Lebanon, Pennsylvania at the Trinity Lutheran Church and whose

first child was born on 9 February 1782 as recorded by the same

church. The Daniel Etter who went to Virginia was already there by

1780 (ref: Montgomery Co., VA militia records); his first child--

also named Catharine was born about 1772. ...)"

Do you plan to put copies of the deeds, tax lists, church records,

etc. that are listed on your "First Generation" page on the Casper

CD? The reason I ask is because my husband and I are planning to go

to Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Tennessee in September for genealogy

research, and I don't want to spend time duplicating information you

will be sharing. I hope to find more information about Martin Etter's

siblings, and I will pass along any discoveries I make to you.

Do you know exactly where Casper lived in Wythe County and exactly

where his son, John, lived in Greene County, TN?

I have pictures of Martin Etter and his daughter, Sarah Ellen Etter

Reynolds and can snail mail copies if you want them. Alyce

The Schrodt's were from Hesse-Darmstadt and John SCHRODT, son of John and

were, therefore, from Hesse-Darmstadt.

I have a RADER that you may or may not have. About 1830 John SCHRODT II m. Anna Maria RADER in Germany. They had four children there and then at the urging of Fredrick SEILER they immigrated to the US. They landed in New Orleans in 1838 and steamed up the Mississippi and Wabash Rivers landing in Mt. Carmel, Wabash Co., Ill. where SEILER met them. Here they settled and had two more children. They family farm is still there and run by the SCHRODTs. Tim TILLYER in Escondido, CA

Subject: Roll Call from: Holmfarm@aol.com

Hi, I've enjoyed hearing about the various Raders you are researching.

I'm looking for information about Isaac Rader, who was born Feb. 27, 1819 in

Greenville, Green County, TN and died Oct. 13, 1916 in Manhattan, KS. This

Isaac Rader was not a Rader by birth but was adopted. I have been unable to

pin down which Rader family he was adopted into. The family information I

have says his adoptive father was John Rader and that he had step brothers

John Rader ("who went to California"), Peter Rader who had a son named

Albert, and Daniel Rader. This does not fit with Jim Rader's info in any neat way. Does anyone know who these folks might be?

Isaac Rader went to Rising Sun, Indiana and married Mary Jane Chambers.

Their children were Ann Rader Norman, Job C. Rader, John B. Rader, Hiram

Rader, Timothy Rader, Josephus Rader, George Rader, William Z. Rader, and

Robert H. Rader. My husband's line comes down through Job C. Rader, born

Aug. 22, 1844. He married Emily S. Yant, and their children were Isaac Albert, Sarah Ann, Lewis W. Margaret J., Melville B., Minnie Belle, and Benjamin Harrison.

Isaac Albert Rader was my husband's grandfather. His children werre

Arthur Croyle, Guy Hamilton, Elnora Winnifred, Mary Eunice, and Lawrence

Meville. There are of course lots more in the current generations.

Although the whole thing started with an adoption, we do think all these

people are really Raders. ;) I am particularly interested in what branch

of the family Isaac Rader was adopted into, and who his birth father was. All we know is, his name was Lawson. My husband is Keith Lee Rader, and his father was Guy Hamilton Rader. I'd appreciate any ideas.

I was wondering if you might have a Nancy G. Reader in your tree. She was

married to Harrison Earl(s) and lived in Wayne Co., WV. I'm not certain

what other residences they had. I received her last name from one of her sons death certificates. Her location and date of birth have been gleaned from census records and they would have her being born abt 1858 in KY.

If you have anything that even looks close, I would love to hear from you.

Brenda

Dear Brenda,

I think we have discussed this before. I do not have any Earl(s) or any WV

Links which I can find. She could, possibly, be a descendent of Jehu READER, who left Mecklenburg Co., VA with his wife Phebe ROBARDS (married there in 1801) and was in Henderson Co., KY by 1810 (Census). There is a town of Robards,KY there so I assume he settled there with his in-laws. I have not researched this line, yet.

I am descended from Jehu's brother Jeptha READER. He and his other brothers'

families were in Overton Co., TN by about 1820. Most stayed in TN, but

Jeptha went to IL in 1830 and some of the others went to IN about then also. If you turn up anything related, please let me know.

I am sending a CC to the various READER/REEDER lists. Maybe someone else can

help you. Don Reader

1. Errors -- It is my approach to collect the errors also and to add notes and documentation as to why I think they are errors

2. Reader - Rader spelling -- My experience with tax records shows that they are not a reliable source for spelling. They did not care they wanted the taxes. The county recorders didn't care either they had different motiviations. If you examine the attached links to signatures you will see that Casper Rader never new he was a "Rader", he thought he was a "Roetter"

3. Rader data base The clearing house is still collecting but way behind in analysis and data entry. Paper submissions are filed computer files seem to be processed more quickly. Either way I plan to incorporate all information in the work. I am quite interested in photographs and biographies.

4. Lonnie FINK, coordinator of the USGENWEB Clark/Floyd Co You didn't include her address so I didnot send a copy please forward a copy for me ?

5. I will try to make time to research your questions about "Henry's family,

parents? etc."

NNickell@aol.com wrote:

Talked to you a few years back [I think by USPS asnd telephone...and sent

A packet of work which combined exxtractions from census, county records of

PA, VA, IN, WA and others, and the first five generations of RADERS from

William RADER'S ?1987? genealogy of the RADER family.

When I looked at actual records where Bill said "they spelled their name

'READER', in many cases, it was just the fancy scroll of the "R" in RADER.

His book was rife with mistakes, but also contained very good material for launching other searches. Because I was induced to submit what I had gathered [after only a few years of genealogy research] to the LDS, much of what they included in their IGI and Ancestral Files has been proven wrong. However, they do not purge their records, but only add the corrections as new material.

At any rate, I still receive many requests for information, and usually Can answer with no problem, but now I've hit a stumper. In the 1870 Knox Co. IN census is a Henry RADER, born PA @ 1820 md to Mary A., born IN @1830 [reported to be nee MITCHELL, md first Alexander GOODMAN; md 2nd Henry RADER 22 Aug. 1856, Daviess Co., IN]; children listed are Jasper 18, George 12, Oliver 11, Andrew 8, Clara B. 6, and Lewis J. 2 ]all born IN] Also enumerated with them are Mary's children: GOODMAN: Nancy J. 10, Julia A. 6, Alexander Downey ?,

Now the fun begins! Nancy J. GOODMAN married Jasper RADER [child of Henry's first marriage to Sarah Ann DARTER]. Do you have any additional info on Henry's family, parents? etc. The query came from Lonnie FINK, coordinator of the USGENWEB Clark/Floyd Co. KY page. I'd like to hear from you also.

Are you still gathering RADER material? In March of this year I got to "dance" on my George RADER and Elizabeth ATER[ESTES etc] graves in Germantown, Wayne Co. IN. It was a real thrill, especially since I drove in, parked the car, walked past one grave, and over one row...AND THERE THEY WERE! George was born in VA and died in 1842 [you have correspondence from my uncle, RichardWarren EDMONSON, that shows George was NOT the same George who married Sarah DUNLAP].

I have lots more on many other RADERS, but am not sure which would be the Best manner for sending to your "clearing house" operation. On a sidekick, I've been toying with the notion that my maternal ancestor,Adam READER in Coffee Co. TN, father of Reason READER, may have been a RADER; he was born in VA, and there is much repetition of the names Adam, Anthony, Henry. That READER name eventually became REEDER!

Thanks for all you do in promoting the RADER family. Nikki
