Tombstone fund
The
Repass association recently replaced one of theirs with a Bronze monument which
only cost $ 2, 000. What do you think, should we go for Granite or do twice as
many restorations and do them in bronze ?
The tombstone of Reginia Rader wife of Casper is broken off and probably lost. Casper Rader’s tombstone is deteriorating badly. These stones were probably done by Lawrence Krone, a well-known Southwest Virginia stone artist of the early 1800s, who also carved an unusual coffin-shaped marker for Rev. George Daniel Flohr.
All of us who have visited their Gravesites have had the same feeling, something should be done to preserve our ancestors tombstone. I join you in hoping that we can raise enough money to replace these tombstones
"When we are gone, the knowledge we have dies with us unless we leave some permanent record behind. One of the sure ways to preserve our history is to see to the perpetual care of the first family’s resting place, to erect a memorial plaque to honor their memory that will tell all who stroll through the old St. John Cemetery that we take pride in the important part our family played in its history, as well as the early history of this country." Beverly Repass Hoch
Please send your donations made out to me ! If we get enough to cause me to worry about the tax consequences I will create a non-profit organization to handle it. But in the meantime I will keep the funds in my account and will publish a quarterly accounting here.
Also send me detailed nominations for grave sites that need attention. I will also publish that list and would appreciate your help in prioritizing the projects. Please provide specific information about the grave sites to be maintained and what they need.
My nomination
Casper and Reginia Rader,
St John’s Historic Cemetery, Wytheville, VA
The current fund contains $100, get your
nominations in so we can move forward with these projects !
Rader Reunion
I would like to see more reunions so that we could get
to know each other. If we have a reunion in an area that Rader families have
lived for generations we could focus the gatherings on those people and the
things they left behind. No matter where we get together we can have various
social, educational and recreational activities.
As you all know travel is expensive so let’s
see if we can figure the most convenient time place and date. For me the most
convenient place is Sacramento California but what is good for you ?
Please fill out and return the enclosed
Questionnaire and I will try to schedule something
p.s. If you know of a reunion and would like
to see more of us there please send me an announcement early enough to get it
in the newsletter. If you attend a reunion pleases send me pictures and a
writup for the newsletter would also be nice!

Thanks for the fine work Charles !

Query 2: READER/REUDER,
My great great grandmother was : Catherine Elizabeth READER/REUDER, born about 18 Feb 1814 in Baden Germany died 15 October 1881 in Liberty Twp., Mercer County, Ohio
She married: Ludwig (Lewis) ANSELMAN (ANSELMENT) born 13 April 1809 in Ersingen, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany died 3 December 1878 in Liberty Twp., Mercer County, Ohio They may have been married in Marion County, Ohio, or a nearby county, moving and appearing on the 1850 Clay Twp., Auglaize Co., OH census, and then the 1870 Liberty Twp., Mercer County, OH, census where they settled.
They were the parents of ten children: Charles b 6 Jan 1839, Mary Elizabeth b 1 Apr 1842, Anna Catherine b 3 June 1843, Caroline b about 1845, Rose Ann b 2 Feb 1845/1846, John b 15 June 1848, Joseph b 4 Aug 1850, Sophia b about 1855, Lewis b 14 Oct 1858, and George b 14 Feb 1860.
I have been unable to make a connection for Catherine Elizabeth (sometimes found as Mary) anywhere in Marion County, Ohio. The children's death certificates have used various forms of the name Reader. No maiden name was given on her death certificate. Her husband's family came into this country about 1830, so I know that they were married in the US and most probably in the Marion County area.
Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. My other e-mail address is dmdonovan@juno.com if the AOL address doesn't respond. We may only have it a week longer. I am searching for the following:
Johann Roder(Roeder): Born: 18 Jan 1872 in Sandberg, Bavaria, Germany.(parents: Friedrich Roder and Rosalie Buhner; Sisters: Carolina, and Methilde). Immigrated: 22 Jan 1889. Query 6: re: Rader and Leedys
Well, I have been searching for a long time now for someone on the
internet who might be working with Leedy descendents and finally, using Excite, I come across someone who is doing about the same thing as myself, only with a different surname.
Well, maybe we can help each other? I know, or at least I believe I can possibly add hundreds of names to your research on the Rader Family. I have spent several weeks in Wythe County compiling information on the Leedy family and have done the same in 13 other states. I have been compiling info on the descendents of the Swiss immigrant John Leedy aka Johannes Lidi (c1715-1760) since 1981 and have records that connect over 30,000.
This I do know for sure .... John Leedy I, who died intestate in York Co., PA, had 8 children live to maturity, all born in Lancaster and York counties, PA. His son 2-John Leedy II (1746-c1823), born an Anabaptist later converting to Lutheranism; was the progenitor of all the early Leedys in the Black Lick District (Wythe Co.) VA area. After the death of his 1st wife, he moved horseback to Evansham c1779 with his new wife and children from his 1st marriage. I found John Leedy's last will and testament filed in the Wythe Co., VA courthouse and it clearly lists all of his children including Jonathan. If you would like, I can send you a copy. This information clearly once and for all identifies the father of Jonathan Leedy. I would like to further
note that I doubt very seriously that Jonathan or Catharine moved to Greene Co., TN. Leedy family tradition indicates that Jonathan and Catharine were buried at St. John's, although I could not find their respective headstones in my visit in 1983 or 86 (however, they were
probably buried there).
2-John Leedy II was born 9/9/1746 in York Co., PA; died c1823 in Black Lick District, Wythe Co., VA; m1 c1769 in York Co., PA to (unknown spouse). She possibly died in having Mary Leedy. They had 4 known children. John m2 5/22/1779 in MD to Elisabeth (Fortney). They had 5 known children.
3-Catharina Leedy** c1770-1830 married 03-10-1795 to Christian Kegley
3-Abraham Leedy c1772-1795 married c1793 to Elizabeth Staley.
3-John Leedy III* c1774-1841 married 4-16-1793 to Polly Gullion.
3-Mary(Molly) Leedy c1777-c1838 married (?) Minnich.
from m2-----------------------------------
3-David Leedy* 1780-9/1/1872 m1 c1802 to Fanny Pemberton,
m2 12/31/1829 Kiturah Ann (?).
3-Elizabeth Leedy** c1783-?? married to John Johnston.
3-Jonathan Leedy* c1784-1852 married c1804 to Catharine Rader.
3-Joseph Leedy* 1786-1851 married 1807 Margaret (?).
3-Sally (Sarah) Leedy** c1792-?? married 4-11-1815 to Peter Clemens.
NOTE:
* I have very good or nearly complete records of descendents to current date for these.
** Would like very much to have better records for these. Do you have suggestions or clues?
I have seen the early records for St. John's Lutheran Church and have come to the conclusion that the Lady and Lydy spellings for Leedy in the earlier records for baptisms were simply spelling errors. Notice that the spellings for Leedy after 1834 become consistently correct!
I'm excited about your sight, so I hope you don't think I'm getting carried away. I would like to put my data out on the internet but don't have a clue on where to begin??? I'm using Family Tree Maker vers. 3.01 to organize volumes of hand written records and eventually publish, or go PDF on CD-ROM with Adobe Acrobat Reader.
By the way, you need to read Rufus Stewart Leedy's "The Ancestry of My People", or, see "The Leedy Chronicles." The later was a family-based newsletter published quarterly from about 1896- 1929. Leedys from all over the country responded with early descendent reports and
contempory family news as well. Rufus, a native of Wytheville, came to the national Leedy Reunion about 1913 via train. However, Rufus' account on the Wythe progenitor was not correct. Also, check your dates for Catherine Rader ... I have c1781. If, as your records indicate, she was born c1771, then she was nearly 59 years of age with her last child Catherine (should be Katherine?) was born?
If you would please E-Mail a response, I would gladly respond with any help I could offer. I notice that some of the names of spouses are a little different than what I have ... I have tried to maintain the purity of these names as much as possible from many different sources. Can you tell me where you got the names for this particuliar family?
Corrections to these records might be made:
(1) Rosina Leedy might be the same nick-name for my Rosannah Leedy, daughter of Jonathan & Catharine Leedy. She died unmarried c1838 in Wythe Co., VA. (2) Malinda Leedy married 9-13-1838 to Ebenezer Yonce. (3) Rebecca Leedy died c1841 and according to family tradition was buried in her wedding gown. (4) Rufus Leedy was always careful to spell Jonathan's youngest child as Katherine ?? Don't know if he was right however. I have a picture of Josiah and Sallie (Sally) Kegley that is very good.

This probably is not exactly what you want to
recieve, but I'm trying to help my father locate his sister who was adopted by

he was from NY. Any
information you might have would be
appreciated.
