The following Correspondence will show you what a valuable tool the Internet has become to me
Hi Jim,
I’m a Dane, at times investigating my ancestry. And my great grand mother, who was a Norwegian by birth, was born Ræder (Raeder). And in my great grandfathers family as well, I find connections to a Johan Georg Raeder, born in Saxony (Sachsen), at least so we assume. He went to Norway around 1660 to act as an overseer in the silvermines. We have the Scandinavian families descending from him pretty well described by now, and keep some contact with our family in Sweden and Norway. But have at present no contact with possible German (or American?) lines. Any hints? And would you like to include our family line in your database?
Please reply to my email at home: ripsen@vip.cybercity.dk
Thanks, Yours faithfully Richard Ipsen Hasselvej 15 2720 Vanlose Denmark
Hi Jim,
I've now extracted my R=E6der ancestors from my database - they go back to Johan Georg Röder, who came to Norway in 1686, from Harzen or Ertzgebirge. Not all the sidelines are included - but can to a certain extent be followed. The file has a total of 103 names.
I actually did find the time to translate the notes to a hopefully passable English, so they are included, albeit rather short.
I'll attatch the file to this email, and hope it gets across to you: If not, please let me know, and I'll simply include it as text in a seperate email and you can extract the text as a gedcom file.
Any information pertaining to the above Johan Georg Röder will be appreciated -
especially by my 96 yr. old great aunt, who is the unofficial head of the Danish and Norwegian Ræders and relatives...
Yours, Richard Ipsen

Hi again Jim,
Just a slight comment on a few of your links to Germany and Austria:
Räder (Raegerman a with 2 dots, der) means bicycle in German, so a couple of your links point to pages commenting the Tour de France (the ultimate bicycle race here in Europe), or to factories selling bicycles...
Equivalent: In Swedish 'rader' means rows - so you have a pointer included to a page that seems to describe how to use a worksheet.
Otherwise, a great pleasure to visit your netpage, and a really great initiative.

I find that in volume II page 147 " Second Attempt to collect All Rader, Reader, Röder, Roeder, Rötter families in America 1995" edited by James L. Rader.
Daniel Rader born 8 Mar 1809 died 18 Oct 1876 buried Old St. Paul’s Church cemetery Newton, Catawba Co., NC. His father was Adam Rader of the same county. His Grandfather was Henry Rader of Burke Co., NC who died in 1779.
He married Fanny Deal 15 Jan 1829 (she was born 20 Jul 1811 died 16 Sep 1889. She had a son Robert Perry Rader
I do not have any other children of this marriage but will now add Jonas M. Rader. Does anyone know who John F. Rader is ?
John Rader was actually the son of Stephen Reeder of Wythe Co. VA
More from Mike Rader, 1506 E. Seminole Ave, Mc Alester, OK 74501
Since I last wrote I had a chance to persue the National Archives records as they relate to John Rader (born circa 1791-6) and married to Permelia Gannaway. As you will recall my hypothesis was that John Rader was actually the son of Stephen Reeder of Wythe Co. VA
This theory was included on page 15-17 in issue 19
I wonder if you have any information on a George Rader born in Tazwell Co. in 1838 (he is listed in the 1850 census as a member of John and Permilia Rader family). His brother was William (b. 1841) Any info on George or brother William would be helpful.
Their older brother Thomas was my great-great grandfather. Family tradition has it that one of the brothers George or William went to California during the Gold rush and was never heard from again.
Perhaps some information on either George or William will help shed some light on the father, John Rader. John and Parmelia also had a daughter Nancy b 1828. This is one I think married John Stailey.

Are REEDER families German or English ancestry ?
Ken Reeder 3088 Fairborn Dr. Memphis, TN 38115 asked the question:
It caused me to collect the following for the next edition of the newsletter.
On a question of history:
I got into a discussion with a professor at Ohio State University (whose name was Reeder) and he insisted that the name was English.
I was just as insistant that it could also be Germanic. It is my understanding that in the 1600 and 1700’s there was much unrest in Europe (there’s always a war someplace, isn’t there) and that many German refugees fled, some through England. The English, the practical people they are, kept (allowed to stay) those immigrants with needed skills and shipped others to the colonies.
Has your research shown that German imigrants migrated through England in the 1700’s
My answer is yes ! when you do research in the library in Salt Lake city the REEDER books are noted as being of either German or English ancestry.
The following brief summary will add emphasis to the point !
The plundering and destruction of central Europe has continued for centuries. The following excerpts from "The Palatine Families of New York 1710" by Henry Z. Jones 1985 (PO Box 8341 - Universal City, CA 91608) will illustrate the point:
1635
a pastor at Partenheim writes "we were ruined and destroyed though-out the land by Swedish and Emperor’s armies and could not return until 1637
1665
the Pastor at Westhofen noted: the parish was scattered by the Mainz-Lothringian invasion – took the books to Worms for security
1668
the pastor at Kröffelbach "a large French force came here to Kröffelbach, plundered everything here and at Oberquembach, Oberwetz, Niederwetz, Reichskirchen and other villages in the Wetterau, demanded a contribution
1693
the French destroyed every church book
1709
the pastor at Berstadt wrote: there has been a horrible, terrible cold, the like of which is not remembered by the oldest who are upwards of 80 years old. As one reads in the newspapers, it spreads not only thorough the entire country, but also through France, Italy, Spain, England, Holland, Saxony, and Denmark, where many people and cattle have frozen to death
the pastor ar Runkel noted: Many cattle and humans, yes - even the birds and the wild animals in the woods froze
Residents of the various Duchies of southern Germany then were in a terrible state from the ongoing wars, oppressive taxation, and devastating winter.
The British government exploited the Palatines’ dissatisfaction by waging an advanced and clever public relations campaign extolling the virtues of life in the new world which also fueled the fires of emigration. This was accomplished by the circulation throughout southern Germany prior to 1709 of the so-called "Golden Book", which painted America almost as the promised land of milk and honey.
Sanford H. Cobb in his work "The story of the Palatines" adds the following:
The first mention of the exodus as begun is the recorded presence of the Palatines in London in surprising numbers, to no small astonishment of the English people ant the equal perplexity and embarrassment of the authorities. The migration was evidently a concerted one at home, with lines stretching into all parts of the principality
… by the end of June 1709 their numbers amounted to five thousand. Before August was passed this number was nearly doubled, while 13,000 is set as the aggregate by the end of October.
… Some also remained in London, going into domestic service or finding engagements in their special handicrafts. Some were sent back to their native country, on account of their religious faith.
There were three large shipments of the people, of which record is made. The first was to Ireland, (500 families), the second large shipment was to the Carolinas (600)

Subject: Re: Rader/Roeder/Ritter ancestry
Dear Jim,
Thanks for your response.
Previous researchers of my Rider ancestors have linked my GGGGGgrandfather Christopher Rider of Rowan and Burke Counties, NC to Henry Rider/Rader and then on to Adam of Augusta County, VA. The linking of Henry to Adam has to do with several circumstantial facts;
1. Henry Rider/Rader's name was actually John Henry Rider/Rader. Adam had two sons (Samuel and John) who some believed were killed by indians. Those researchers believe that the John of Augusta County and Henry of Rowan County were one in the same.
2. Henry lived beside a Charles Robinson who was a former neighbor of and leased land to Adam Rader of Augusta County. It is even possible that Henry's wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Charles Robinson.
3. Henry was aparantly close friends with a Nicholas Fry, another former neighbor of Adam Rader.
While I do believe that Christopher was certainly related to Henry, I'm not so sure they were father and son. The reason for my doubts involves a recent find I made of a 1760 tax list that includes Christopher and not Henry. I find it very strange that Christopher would have been living alone on his own and not near his father at such a young age. The first record I have found of John Henry Rider/Rader was a document wherein he was given a bounty for the ears of a predatory cat in 1765. The bottom line here is that I am seeking additional evidence of the parentage of Christopher.
The book that I bought from you confirmed many of my findings. Much of the information I had already learned from books by Cecile Rhodes Cannon and Dr. Bill Rader.
I have not yet published my findings as I have a great deal of additional research to do. However, I just started publishing a quarterly newsletter. I will send you a copy. I would like to have a copy of your newsletter. My address is;

The census records of the United States of America have a system which tries to solve the problems created when names are spelled by census takers as they hear them. This system trys to combine all like sounding names under one code. In this case
