There is now actual genealogy on our web site.  As you will remember from the 19th issue of this newsletter the site previously contained information about our newsletter and various genealogy books on Rader/Roeder lines.  That is no longer true as I have added over 300 new pages.  These pages are networked together to provide information on all known immigrants plus descendants of two colonial immigrants.

I started with the descendants of Adam Rader, who is the father of those in the Allentown, PA and Timberville, VA colonial Roeder families.  I included the first five generations of his descendants.  There are only 84 pages in this area because I started with the 3 generations in Europe and we only know one or two descendants from those early families.  This section has an every person index and each family has it’s own page.

I then added my own immigrant Casper Roetter of Wythe Co, VA and five generations of his descendants.  The  215 pages in this area start with the immigrant because we do not have his European  source nor ancestors

The third new section is the contents extracted from the Filby passenger list books.  You will remember the information from issue 1 and 2 of this newsletter which was updated in the 5th issue.  That 1992 update needs to be worked on because Filby has published several new yearly volumes since then.

This article is another example of why we should collect our medical history.  When you find illness and causes of death please share them.  The life you save may be your grandchild !!

One Family’s Search for a Faulty Gene

(from the Wall Street Journal Thursday Aug 15, 1996)

by Wendy Bounds

When the Slone family of Eastern Kentucky got together in a Virginia park earlier this year, physicians from three states flipped hamburgers and dished out potato salad.  In between servings, the doctors drew blood samples from family members and filled out medical charts.

The Slones carry a mutant gene for hereditary pancreatitus, a rare and painful illness that causes the pancreas to literally digest itself during attacks.  Known in Kentucky as simply “Sloans disease,” it has traveled from one generation to another, affecting some family members and not others.  Doctors from the universities of Pittsburg, Kentucky and Cincinnati now think they have isolated the faulty gene that causes it, thanks to the Slone family’s reunions, which have helped track down information about more that 700 family members in nine generations.

Mapping family medical histories is at the heart of genetics research.  As physicians try to establish heredity links for diseases from cancer to diabetes, they are learning all they can about how such illnesses pass through families.  By doing intricate molecular comparisons of those who are affected and those who aren’t, researchers hope to pinpoint the exact genes responsible.  That, in turn, may lead to tests that can predict whether offspring will have the disease or not, and ultimately to possible treatments as well

(one column left out - see the Journal on page B1)

One weekend, Cleveland doctors told the Sloans they wanted to study the hereditary nature of the disease.  They asked Bobby Sloan, if he had a family tree ----

Mr Sloan began to chronicle his findings on white poster board. With a green marker, he underlined names of relatives who’d been diagnosed with pancreatitus or recalled suffering similar pain.  With an orange marker he underlined those who also had diabetes.- - -

Finding Kevin was a breakthrough; discovering that his father had constructed a family tree was icing on the cake !!!!!

What is needed is someone with the time to volunteer and do the xeroxing.  The county charges may be as much as $1 per page but as you can see it is worth it.  These actual original documents do not exist anywhere else

WWII Röder soldier’s letter home - has NOT arrived yet

[JLR1] During World War II my grandfather was handed a “Soldbuch” by a dying german soldier named Horst Röder.  I have spent the last year and a half looking for living relatives of this man.  I intend to return the book to the family as soon as I can.  There are many pictures of family included in the book as well as a letter to his wife Margareta Röder

one of the few typed documents reads:

Dem   Gefreiten  (Dienftgrad)

Horst Röder (Bor = und Suname)

2./ Div. Fus. Btl. (A.A.) 334

Mr Anderson promised his dying father he would get these items to the family.  If you can help please do.  I hope to obtain good copies of the photographs so that I can put them on the web so those European Internet users can see them.

I guess in that case "Reder" is short for "Fahrreder" what means=

my father's family tree going back to the year 16xx

Re: Rotter surname

From:   Mark Rotter <markr@global.co.za>

References:         1

Hi James,

I'm sorry but I only did a bit of research into my family tree and that was in 1988 when I toured around in Europe for a few months, so most of what I can contribute are "fuzzies".

When I was in Germany and Austria I found out that at one stage my family did have the name "Roter" and this is derived from the German word for the colour red this being "Rot". ... I think "Roter" would mean "redder" as in "more red in colour"

I also know that I have an uncle (once/twice removed?) in Vienna who has a copy of my father's family tree going back to the year 16xx (This was from during the time of Hitler when all Germans needed to have their family tree that far back because of his perverted view that there

should be no Jewish ancestry in the "pure" German race.)

I believe (and this may be totally wrong) that one of the Rotter's from that family tree moved to New York this century sometime ... First Name: Juergen?

If you really want his address then I will make and effort to look for it, but having just recently married and being engaged quite seriously at my church as well as at the Bible College and in business I find myself already slightly overextended :) so please have mercy when you

send queries on to me :) :) :)

Just for interest sake ... on my Grandfather's side of the family (Rotter) ... his Father was married to a lady called "Pauluci de la Roncoli" (I don't know the correct spelling.) and she was a

descendant (by eldest son ... except for her of course) of the "Kaiser"  / King of Venice ... in the year 7xx ... yes sevenhundred and something.   This is the family tree that goes the farthest that I have ever seen ... what is the farthest that you have come across?

God's richest blessings !!!

Yours in Christ  markr

Subject: Re: Rader/Roeder/Ritter ancestry

Dear Jim,

Thanks for your response.

Previous researchers of my Rider ancestors have linked my GGGGGgrandfather

Christopher Rider of Rowan and Burke Counties, NC to Henry Rider/Rader and

then on to Adam of Augusta County, VA. The linking of Henry to Adam has to

do with several circumstantial facts;

1. Henry Rider/Rader's name was actually John Henry Rider/Rader. Adam had

two sons (Samuel and John) who some believed were killed by indians. Those

researchers believe that the John of Augusta County and Henry of Rowan

County were one in the same.

2. Henry lived beside a Charles Robinson who was a former neighbor of and

leased land to Adam Rader of Augusta County. It is even possible that

Henry's wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of Charles Robinson.

3. Henry was aparantly close friends with a Nicholas Fry, another former

neighbor of Adam Rader.

While I do believe that Christopher was certainly related to Henry, I'm not

so sure they were father and son. The reason for my doubts involves a recent

find I made of a 1760 tax list that includes Christopher and not Henry. I

find it very strange that Christopher would have been living alone on his

own and not near his father at such a young age. The first record I have

found of John Henry Rider/Rader was a document wherein he was given a bounty

for the ears of a predatory cat in 1765.

The bottom line here is that I am seeking additional evidence of the

parentage of Christopher.

The book that I bought from you confirmed many of my findings. Much of the

information I had already learned from books by Cecile Rhodes Cannon and Dr.

Bill Rader.

I have not yet published my findings as I have a great deal of additional

research to do. However, I just started publishing a quarterly newsletter. I

will send you a copy. I would like to have a copy of your newsletter. My

QUERIES

Query 1:

I have just received a wonderful break through in my search and it’s all because of an article you published in the Greene County, TN “Pioneer”, Nov 1995, Vol. #2 page 98.

My great grandfather, William Date Hudson, was located residing with a John and Nancy Day in 1870 Greene Co., TN.  He was 12 years old at the time and no matter where I looked to find out why, I was hitting stone walls.

Then I discovered your article, in which you talk about a John Rader who passed away leaving some land in dispute.  In the dispute, his children are named, one of which was a Sophia Rader who was married to a Leander W. Hudson !  Nancy Day’s maiden name was Rader.

Please send me any info. you may have on Sophia and Leander and a contact of who else may have information.  I am really stuck right now and need any assistance you can provide.

Judy Sue Thompson - 4642 Deer Point Dr. - Spring Texas 77389

Query 2:

I am writing to inquire if your database includes information concerning the Peter Roeder family of Jackson Co., IA.  I would gladly exchange information.

Peter Roeder married Katherine Gousche (Gosche, Goscha) in Luxembourg.  They immigrated to this country in May of 1867 and settled in Perry township of Jackson Co, IA.  Peter was born in 1840, married Katherine about 1864 and died in 1900.  Katherine was the daughter of Theodor and Maria Schmitt Gousche, was born in 1841 and died in 1905.

Their children, all born in Perry township were:

Theodor (Frank), Margaret, Peter John, John, Nicholas, Michael, Phillip, Maria, Mary, John Peter, Frank Michael, John Theodor, and Katherine.

Sheryl Hays - 8601 Lockmoor Circle, Wichita KS 67207

Query 3:

My great-grandfather was Isaac Rader (son of George) of Clarion Co., Redbank township, PA.  George was an early pioneer of New Bethlehem or Redbank Twp.  George was married to Susanna Space ?  and they had 5 children (1850 PA Census)  George was born about 1817 and died around 1859.  She died in 1851.  At least four children were left as orphans and according to Clarion Co. Orphans Court records Issac was placed in custody of Allen Space.  The Space family lived next door to George Rader in the 1850 census.  Isaac’s sister Catharine (born in 1842) married William Shindeldecker in 1857.  Isaac’s other sibs were Jacob, Sarah, and Joseph.

In the early  ‘60s Ike Rader left home and joined the Army for Civil War duty.  He ended up down in TN when the war was over and lived in Blount Co., and Knox Co.  His Civil War records indicate he was married twice.

He married Mary Jane Hill and they had a rathher large family.  Oodles of descendants here

Ike did return in the 1880’s to Clarion Co., PA to reclaim his portion of his father’s estate.  Court documents show there was nothing left

I don’t have much more about George Rader and Family and would appreciate knowing more.

   From:    vndychip@ix.netcom.com (Randy King )

I was just fooling around this afternoon and did a yahoo search for

Rader and was surprised to see some come up! I thought I would tell you

a little (and a little is all I know) about the Raders in my family.

My grandfather was Alton Leon Rader and he had a brother named Dezie Rader and I think they may have been from North Carolina. My

grandfather worked for Tastee Bread in Nashville for many years. He and

my grandmother raised horses and rented them out for birthday parties,

etc. in the early 1950's. Alton died in the mid-1950's and my grandmother, Bertie Marie Stuart Rader died in 1994. They had 2 children, Beatrice Rader Jones (Franklin, Tennessee) and Leon Corbert Rader (my dad from Gordonsville, Tennessee).

I am Beverly Denise Rader King (b. 1-17-58)(Ashland City, Tennessee) and married to William Randall King. We have a son, Richard Anthony King, who was born 11-14-78. My sister is Anita Gayle Rader Phillips (3-14-60)(Gordonsville, Tennessee) and is married to Donnie Phillips. They have 2 children, Dustin Paul and Rebecca Renee. I have a brother, Bruce Douglas Rader (2-5-63)(Hickman, Tennessee) who is married to Julie Rader.  They have a son, Gabriel Lee Rader. My other brother is Charles Leon Rader (5-22-64)(Pleasant Shade, Tennessee) is is not married.

Alton's brother, Dezie, married my grandmother's sister, Annie Mae

Stuart and therefore all of us are double cousins! Dezie and Annie Mae

had 4 children, Stuart Rader (deceased), Howard Rader (Springfield, Tennessee), Paul Rodney Rader (Kissimmee, Florida) and Dorothy Rader

Branham (Nashville, Tennessee).

I do not know much about the Rader side of my family.
