Deutchen Familienarchiv

This collection of over 100 voulmes of German Genealogies with indexes was searched at my request. The fee for the search was 2 hours of labor @ $10 plus xerox of 183 copies and postage.

I was fortunate in my timing of this request because they just recieved a dozen or so missing volumes. The comprehensive index is up through volume 100. There are 12 more volumes not yet cross indexed, it is hoped that they will be soon. If you want further information the society can be reached at: Jean Nissund, Immigrant Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 7369, Burbank, CA 91510-7369

As you can see below the Röder spelling occurs most often. The volumes mentioned in the index for various spellings are as follows:

RADER 52, 53, 54, 55, 58, 64, 71

RADERS 90

RAEDER 6, 26, 42, 61, 80

RODER 1, 20, 52, 53, 54, 66, 80

RÖDER 6-9, 20, 25-29, 31, 33, 38, 43, 46, 73, 86-88, 96, 98

ROEDER 1, 15, 29, 41, 86, 92

RÖTER 82

ROTER 28

ROTTER 22, 72, 89

I am going to try to get professional help to translate them before I print the Summer issue of Raders Ramblings. If you would like to help, let me know and I can send you some genealogies. You tell me which spelling you wish to work on !

Who married Henry Rader 14 Dec 1790 in Wythe Co., VA

I suspect that your are not surprised that we take issue with the statement that Mary Etter was the Daughter of Daniel Etter and Mary Magdalene Rein because you label it as disputed. It is our opinion that this is a mistake that has been repeated too many times without reference to the original data,

The prime factors in our reasoning are:

1. In the church records of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Lebanon, PA is an entry that Daniel Etter married Maria Magdalena Rein on 25 April 1781

2. In the records of the same church appears an entry that a child, Catharine, was born to Daniel and Maria Magdalena on 9 February 1782

3. In the Wythe county, VA records of the marriage of Catharine Etter, daughter of Daniel and Mary Etter, married Henry Rader on 14 December 1790 with Rev. John Stanger performing the ceremony.

This of course was our initial clue for if you accept those records as pertaining to the same individuals then Catherine was married prior to her 9 th birthday. Now we didn't claim this couldn't be possible but it certainly wasn't likely.

Checking further we found there was no shortage of Daniel Etters who served in Pennsylvania units during the Revolutionary War. While we have some clues we have yet to sort out those Daniel Etters without doubts. And perhaps our research on Daniel Etter/ Maria Magdalena Rein is not exhaustive, still we have never found any indication that they ever left Pennsylvania.

But for our Daniel Etter we found positive evidence that he (and at least his brother Peter) were in Virginia in Montgomery Co., prior to 1780, (that part later to become Wythe Co.) In fact Daniel and Mary Magdalene had 5 children by 1780; at lest two of these (John and Samuel E.) we know were born in Montgomery co ( 1778 & 1780). While we have spent many hours it is unfortunate that we have yet to identify the maiden name of Mary Magdalene or when/where they were married. We have not given up.

Wythe County Philip's, are Reeders and Raders related?

I have recently prepared some sketches of the Raders for my Volume 3 of "Early Adventures", which I hope will be out in 1994 or early 1995, I thought I could add some information on some of your Wythe County, VA questions.

One of the Philip Reeders stayed here in Wythe county, and died in 1801, leaving a will and naming his children as Jacob, Josiah, Diana, Juana (Johannah), Pamela, and Mandana (Wythe County Will Book 1, p 197). They are well documented with their spouses.

William Rader, son of Casper, who died about 1802, had a wife "Diney" or "Christiany" Helvy (Helvey), whom he married in 1798. Sometime prior to the settlement of the Rader estate the widow, then properly called Christiana, married Absalom Fickle. On April 10, 1805, John Rader became guardian for the Rader children named as Samuel, Ann, and Susanna. There could not be any others because they were only married about four years before he died. In 1809, John obtained permission to bind out Samuel Rader to Christopher Oury to learn the trade as a tailor and to bind out Anne Rader to Christoper Brown (son of Christopher). In 1815, Susannah, "upwards of 14 years," chose John Repass as her guardian and Anne, her sister, chose Christopher Brown. These are a matter of record in the Order Books of Wythe County.

A John Rader is mentioned in 1798 as operating a tavern in Wythe County, but no exact location is mentioned. I also found this in the order book.

The children of Stephen Reeder (Rader, etc) are well documented here because of lawsuits. They are named as Samuel, John, Philip, Major, Nancy wife of John Stailey, Sally wife of Alexander Thompson who was deceased and had two children Steven and Minerva, and Hannah, wife of Robert Davis. In 1823 when one of the suits was filed, Samuel, Philip and Major Reeder were not inhabitants of Virginia.

Some reaserchers claim that Major (also Majors) Reeder married Jane Wood, but our records show he married here and she was Jane Williams, daughter of Samuel Williams. Was he married twice, perhaps after he moved to Tennessee?

One of the Philip Reeders (Rader, etc) moved to Tazwell County, VA, but how long he stayed there is not known to me. Perhaps others of the family moved there too.

Also you might be interested to know that Rebecca and Margaret are probably the same person. What a custom! But I have found it here often, and I guess it is similar to Nancy and Agnes being the same too.

Mary Kegley, P.O. Box 134, Wytheville, VA 24382

Books containing RADER information

Do you have access to any of them ? They should be available in some local libraries. If you can find them please send me the publisher's address so that I can try to purchase a copy !

The LDS library of Salt Lake city has recently updated it's Card Catalog and placed it on CD-ROM. An extraction for the spelling "RADER" produces the following list of works. The ones that I currently have are followed by my comments. The rest are works that I would like to have access to.

I enclose the family group record and documenting notes of my g-g-g-grandfather George RADER, of Wayne County, IN. This family is well-documented as is my descendancy from George and his wite Elizabeth. On the other hand, George's ancestry as is confesed by published writings -- by FINNEY, WAYLAND, and William RADER -- containing inconsistencies leading me to conclude that they do not correctly list the generations between George and Mathias. These references assume that one George RADER married first SARAH DUNLAP and second Elzabeth EDER.

Jesse RADER b abt 1772,

(Since Adam was about 29 when Thomas was born, Jessie must have married very young to have children over this span of years).

all are sons of George RADER and Sarah DUNLAP

Richard W. Edmonson -- 1004 Oak Tree Lane -- Las Vegas, NV 89108-1144

Query 3: Thanks for responding last month, I have more --

I have come across a major problem with the interpretation of many Rader researchers which concerns John Rader of Indiana, who married Catherine (Kifer) Murphy in Greene County TN. Everyone has traditionally linked this man to the family of Peter and Elizabeth (Freshour) Rader.

Since Greene county records clearly show John Rader as one of the grandchildren of John Freshour, deceased 1806, and this John who married Catherine was in Rush County, IN, where most of the other children of Peter and Elizabeth (Freshour) Rader lived. The bible record of this John and Catherine has been found. The bible states their birth dates as well as those of their children, but provides no further information. The assumption of his parentage seems to fit.

I have found two deeds which appear to contradict and disprove this assumption. Greene Co., TN deed Vol 12, page 231-2 shows John and Peggy Rader (i.e. Margaret) selling their portion of their grandfather John Freshour's land to his brother Jacob Rader "of Jefferson Co., TN in January 1825

At first glance it would seem that this Peggy might be the Margaret, daughter of Peter, who married David Rhea/Ray on 2 March 1824 in Rush Co., IN. Someone has pointed out that even though her name is given in this deed as Peggy "Rader", this alone does not disprove that she was the same woman as the already married Margaret Rhea.. Several of the later deeds in Greene County, which concern the John Freshour estate, list all of Peter and Elizabeth Rader's children by their maiden names. This deed also speaks of "we being two of those (eleven) heirs", but I believe that this refers to John and Jacob, not John and Peggy. The deed follows the usual formatted statement for husband and wife and never once states that Peggy is a separate daughter and heir.

Further proof that this John Rader is not the John Rader who married Catherine and who went to Rush county by 1823 comes in a land deed in Jefferson county (Volume P page 5) In this deed, John Rader bought 88 1/2 acres of land by indenture on 17 February 1818, and it is recorded as paid in 1821. Tax records in Jefferson county show that he lived there continuously until at least 1836. The tax records continue to 1853!

The John Rader who married Catherine had land in Rush county, IN by 1824 and would not have land in Jefferson co., TN at the same time. The John Rader continued to own Tennessee land for 12 years after his removal from Tennessee.

Thus I must conclude that it was not the John Rader who married Catherine (Kifer) Murphy who was the son of Peter and Elizabeth (Freshour) Rader, but rather the John Rader who appears in this deed to be the husband of Peggy.

Many Questions arise as a result ..

1. Who were the real parents of the John who married Catherine (Kifer) Murphy If they were not who we thought they were ?

2. Where did the John Rader who married Peggy and lived in Jefferson Co., TN go after living in Jefferson county? Did he have any children? He is not found in the 1840 or 1850 census and there is no record of a sale of his land. He is no longer in the tax records in 1853.

3. What happened to Jacob the brother of this Jefferson county John Rader, who was said to be "of Jefferson County" but never showed up in the tax records there? I believe that the writer of the deed meant that it was John, not Jacob, who was of Jefferson county, and that Jacob was at that time still in Greene County (where his mother left him her portion of the Freshour estate.

4. Most researchers have him hooked up with a wife, Catherine. They say that he lived and died in Greene County. But if this is true, why are there references in the court records to the sale of 100 acres of his land for payment of a debt to the Freshour executors because Jacob had not responded to their court decrees?

5. Why do other court records suggest that his notes are "supposed to be of no value" just as they state when someone had died? I believe that he had left the area by 1830, but I don't know where he went or whether he later returned.

I would appreciate hearing all evidence for and against the above concerns and questions.

I would also solicit evidence about the other children attributed to Peter and Elizabeth (Freshour) Rader. These too seem to be very shakily proven at best. Catherine, Margaret, Mary, Michael and Elizabeth.

Does anyone have evidence of the middle name of their son, Peter S. Rader ?
