_ CHALLENGE OF EXPLORING THE RöDER-RADER FAMILIES. page 19

This issue contains the results of many years of work. The church records from Colonial Pennsylvania have been translated from the original German to English by William J. Hinke. He apparently typed one original with several carbon copies. The work spans many years through the 1930's. I have seen more than one copy of the same church. His early work appears with no notes, later revisions show that he revisited his work. The ones that I have seen are in The Burks county Genealogical Library, the Lancaster Mennonite library and the latest in the Archives of the Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society. I have started working my way through their lending library of Microfilm.

If you have any RADER church records from Colonial Pennsylvania, please share them with me and I will collate them into one complete list with index.

Second Attempt to Collect ALL of the Rader/Raeder/Reader/Röder/Roeder/Rötter

Families in America

The printed copies of the first attempt are about gone. There are no Hardbound copies left and only three soft bound. The data base of Raders has grown from around 10,000 individuals to over 17,000 since September 1992. Many errors have been corrected in the data base and the quality of information is better.

Please get all of your corrections and additions in as soon as you can. I will probably create a draft copy of the "Second Attempt" this spring.

Two Years of checking microfilm, 23 Rolls checked

The Berks County Genealogical society offers several services. Much of the work which produced the successful location of Casper Rader (1732-1812) in Pennsylvania was produced by Elaine Schwar.

In 1991 I discovered that one could rent microfilmed records from Berks County Genealogical society. For the next two years I rented film at a rate of two rolls per month. My usual approach was to check for indexes. If I found one I would check several spellings of Rader. The materials from those searches are enclosed.

The following is a list of those rented
009 - Tohickon Lutheran Church
013 - 2 reformed churches from 1763 -
014 - misc early churches
018
025 - St Peters in Richmond twp
026 - Bethel Evangelical, Robeson twp
028 - misc early churches
029 - misc early churches
033 - Bethlehem
034 - misc early churches
035 - misc early orphan records
065 - Lebanon Co newspaper clippings 1760 -
106 - Rev Traugott Frederick Illing 1780-
121 - misc early churches
122 - St Peters in Richmond twp
138 - 2 reformed churches from 1740 -
139 - Plow Lutheran, Robeson 1770- & Bowers
142 - Gerhart family
212 - Trinity Lutheran in Reading from 1751
214 - Berks County Tax lists (incl Bethel twp)
217 - " " " " (incl. Oley twp)
218 - " " " " (incl. Robeson twp)
224 - Journals of Berks

My usual searching method was:

1.Look for any spelling like Rader, Ritter, Roeder, etc.

2. stop checking after 1800, they get very large as the population increases.

FRESHOUR NEWSLETTER.

The Quarterly newsletter is available from her)

John Rader ??

I think my John Rader concerns are a major issue that should be tackled by as many people as possible. It's just not fair to let people think they have their Rader line connected up correctly if it isn't the case. If you wish to discuss the matter with me, feel free to call

(evenings: 801-359-9787).

Do you have any clues concerning the parentage and descendants of John Jacob Röder who married Rosina Barbara Walter/Walther 19 Oct. 1755 at the First Reformed Church in Lancaster PA (by Philip Wm. Otterbein)

Editors note: WALTHER does not appear in the data base except for George Walther RADER g-g-grandson of Peter Hillikus Rader. Where did he get that middle name ?

He had a son John in 1756 baptized by Rev. Jacob Lischy and he was a baptismal sponsor at the New Hanover Lutheran Church. He was in the same area where the Froschauer/Freshour family was. Jacob Röder came to America on the ship Restauration in 1747.

I've received your FGR's on the John Raders of Greene Co., TN, and have been trying to find you some answers. I have not yet covered all of the available sources of information in the area or in Wythe Co., VA, but have some questions which you can answer for me before I continue... The most obvious men of child-bearing age in Greene Co. who could have had or did have a John are:

Henry,

Jacob,

John, and

Phillip of Wythe Co. who moved to Greene Co. about 1806;

Peter Rader who married Elizabeth Freshour;

George Rader who in the 1850 Greene Co. census was aged 77,

so born about 1773.

Do you show others?

There's also the possibility that a child named John could have been RELATED to one of the others and have come along with that family.

We can easily establish who the John, son of Henry, is by the administration records and cemetery records of Greene Co. He was born 11 Sep. 1793 and died 8 Nov. 1839, married Hannah Scott 22 Aug. 1814.

My only question here is why Henry named this John in his will, written in 1846 after John was already dead.

Editors note: my current information is that this John Rader married Elizabeth Ottinger in 1849 and had 13 children. His son John Wesley was born in 1867.

Next question concerns John Rader who married Mary Etter. Her will shows only children

Elizabeth Rader (md. William Rader of Henry 1820),

Lucinda Colyer,

Catherine Altorn (All trim),

Isabella Guthrie,

and Emaline Jenkins.

Where did the names of the other children - including John Jr., Sophia, Sally, Mary, Samuel, and William - come from? And what do you have which proves that the John Rader who married Ethelinda Smiley is his son? That info. seems a little suspect to me especially since you have the latter as born 1795 in Wythe Co./ but in the 1850 Greene Co. census he and his wife are shown as born in Tenn.

Jacob didn't seem to have had any John who reached maturity. There is no mention of one in his will, his widow's land records, etc. In one place there is mention of some "minor children"

Next question is Phillip who was obviously related to Henry, Jacob, and John. There were two men by this name in Wythe Co. with different wives -

Margaret and Rebecca - but I cannot find any mention of the Greene Co. Phillip's wife's name. Do you have it and the names of his kids? He seems to have moved away from Greene Co. or died without a will or administration) sometime after 1807. But he COULD have had a son John, and if Phillip died in Greene Co., this could be the source of one of those Johns. Thoughts? .......

Next there's George of 1850, born ca. 1773. He obviously had a son named Andrew with whom he was living at the time. But no other Raders seem to be living next to them. And they do not seem to be there in 1840, so may have come late to Greene Co. Can you connect them up to someone /somewhere?

.... I also question where to fit in Lemuel Rader who married Elizabeth Ann Myers and the two witnesses to Elizabeth's will in 1855, William and Cornelius Rader. Could these be sons of Phillip? Maybe this is the William who married Peggy Paysinger in 1824?

.....I believe that there were also a Rev. Andrew Rader and a Samuel + Delila Rader in Sinking Springs Church in the 1820's who I suppose might have been old enough to have had a son John born in the 1790's. And what about the Andrew Rader who md. Lydia Andes in 1834? Where does he fit in?

...Now, as for the Jefferson Co. John, there is an Elizabeth Rader who md. T. Summitt in that county in 1835. Perhaps by following this Elizabeth and finding her death certificate we could find out at least who her parents' names were, i.e. hopefully she's the daughter of the John Rader of Jefferson Co. and his wife Peggy. I think the Clarissa who married James Carmon may belong to this family, also. I 'ye been in contact with Sue Terando, who gave you the information that she was John ' s (who md. Catherine Kifer Murphy) child, and she now says she thinks that is an error. There is no evidence for Clarissa having ever come back to Tennessee to marry. It doesn't make sense

... Somebody in the IGI shows a John Rader md. a Mary in 1814 in Greene Co. Who does he belong to - or is this just incorrect?

.... Another thought on the John who married Catherine Kifer Murphy - could he possibly be related to the Jacob and Eve Rader who went to Rush Co., IN about the same time? I think Jacob and Eve came from VA, didn't they? I think this John may have been born in PA but have come through VA on his way to TN. I know it seems like he should belong to PeterJs family, but I just don't see how that can be if the tax records show him as being in Jefferson Co. from 1818 to 1836. Also, I found a land grant which shows he received land there on April 15, 1815. If born about 1791-2, as we suspect of Peter's son, he would have been of prime age to be striking out on his own, with or without a new wife. I wonder if he didn't marry in Cocke Co., where the records have been lost. Peter lived close to the county line, whereas the others lived farther away towards Hawkins Co

..... A few final thoughts on the Wythe Co . Raters ..There was a William Rader, with a wife Christiany, who died in 1802. Might he have had a John who, now without a father, went on to TN with the other Wythe Co. Raters? Do you know anything about the Wm. + Christiany Rader family? Also there were Daniel and Elizabeth (md. before 1805), Conrad and Elizabeth (ditto), and perhaps Samuel and Elizabeth (Guenther) Reader (md. before 1809).

It appears that many of these Rader males are sons of Conrad and Barbara... all originally of Northampton Co., PA, right? I haven't done the land records yet, so am reaching here.

.... Lastly, there is another John Rader in Gibson Co., TN by 1827, and he had a family by 1830 . Do you know anything about this man?

Did you find those RADER records at Johns Hopkins University ?

I can shed a bit of light for you on the Melvin Rader whose letters you are seeking from Johns Hopkins University, and perhaps you can help me in return. Melvin was my grandfather and was a noted professor of philosophy at the University of Washington in Seattle. He wrote many books including several philosophy textbooks (still used today) and a book entitled False Witness, which is his personal story of the time when he was wrongly accused a Communist during the McCarthy era.

As a liberal, politically-active man who was President of his local ACLU, he was a prime candidate for the accusation during a period of suspicion and repression. It took more than fifteen years to finally overcome the shadows of this accusation. I suspect that the letters which are found in the Johns Hopkins University concern his attempts to present Convincing evidence that he was NOT a communist.

I knew my grandfather as a very kind, quiet man, nonviolent both philosophically and literally; an extremely career-driven person; and the very essence of the absent-minded professor image. He was extremely bright and was a very well-liked professor at the university. Melvin Rader died of cancer on June 14, 1981 and is missed by all who knew him.

If you are able to receive copies of his correspondence, please send me copies, as I do not have them. I understand that he can also still be seen on TV now and then in the Seattle area, and the Univ. of Washington at Seattle supposedly has some tapes in which he is the speaker. To date, I have been unable to get copies but would LOVE to do so. Of course I would be happy to reimburse anyone who manages to get copies! Thanks... Sincerely,-

P.S. I haven't had time yet to search for the possible "other connection" for Peter and John Rader who may connect up with your Rader line, but plan to do so one of these days...

I collect antique photo albums and one in my collection includes photos of a Röder family of Kitzingen am Main, Germany. I believe that the Dorthea Röder in the album is the "Grandmother's Mother" to the HEY family. She had a sister Henrika and their parents appear to be Johann Georg Röder and Katharina.

This album came from the estate of a H. SCHAPER. The HEY immigrants came to the USA in the late 1800's. Lizzie, Dora M., Christian and "Old Dunta" settled in Allegheny City (now part of Pittsburg), Allegheny Co., PA.

If you know of anyone descended from this Röder family please let them know that this album is for sale -- but will only be sold to a descendant of this Röder family.

THE CHALLENGE OF EXPLORING THE RöDER-RADER FAMILIES.

The most rewarding challenge in exploring the RADER family was in documenting the existence of the family in Pennsylvania and Virginia. There has always been a great deal of information available about the family, but most historians left the RADER families out of their writings. We believe it is appropriate to philosophize little about why this occurred in this, as well as other German families.

1. Germans were considered foreigners by the English in both Pennsylvania and Virginia. This more or less isolated them from other nationalities, especially the English. It was not until 1777 that a German held a political office in Rockingham County (the northern part of the original Augusta County) even though that county was inhabited mostly by Germans. Only two Justices were named at that time; one was ANTHONY RADER, (Generation 4 numbers 1.2.3.9.) In the minute Books of Rockingham County ANTHONY'S last name is spelled at least twelve different ways. Herbert Hoover, U.S. President from 1928-1932 was the first United States President to be of German descent and only the second to have a non-English name. Through the years many Hoovers were born in the Shenandoah Valley. Two of them married into the RADER family, one of whom was JESSE RADER who married DIANNE HOOVER in Rockingham Co., VA. before 1835 (see Generation 6, number 1.2.3.1.4.7.)

2. Like most Germans, the RADERS were a very close-knit family, living near one another until the early 18OO's. Even when they moved to other parts of the country, usually at least two families went together.

3. They were steadfast in their religious beliefs, but were not radicals or trouble makers. In fact, it appears they were just the opposite since there are very few court or church records that indicate they were in any kind of trouble.

4. They were all progressive farmers; most of them were hard working and well-to-do. They were deeply involved with their families and took pride in their work, which apparently caused some envy among other groups because the Germans worked so much better with their hands and with the land than did other nationalities.

5. They were involved with their neighbors, in signing marriage bonds, witnessing wills, land deeds, road improvements, minor court matters, administrators of wills, etc., but never were pretentious about it. (point can be made here in that there is no RADER family history, except one published by H. C. ROEDER in 1944 which several people have copied, although R. M. DANFORD added some information about the Timberville area e.g., the RADER house, the RADER Church and the RADER Mine(s). (3) ADAM and ANNA BARBARA and three of their sons, MATHIAS, ANTHONY and GEORGE, lived in close proximity to one another during most of their lives. Records of the three sons are found in numerous land transactions in Augusta Co., VA

6. There were many variations in spelling both the given and surname, often making it difficult to document a person or family. A good example of finding information about the RADER family in various types of documents is in the Following:

On December 23, 1748 ADAM and MATHIAS ROEDER witnessed the will of John Johnson. Knowing MATHIAS was the oldest child (as noted in (3) ADAM'S will and that he would have had to have been at least 21 years of age to witness the will), and since his parents, (3) ADAM and ANNA BARBARA) were married ca 1724 MATHIAS would have been born in 1725-1727. Also, DAVID RADERS Marriage Bond gave the maiden name of his mother; i.e., "father MATHIAS READER, mother JESSIE (BENDER) READER

Most of the RADER Families were quite religious (See pages 8 and 48) and supported their churches throughout the years. Before churches were established, many families held services in their homes both in Pennsylvania and Virginia. (See page 19) The RADERS had a direct involvement with at least four churches in this country: one was the Falkner Swamp Reformed Church, Gilbertsville, PA (See page 19); the second was the Davidson Church For Lutheran and Reformed in New market, VA (See page 85); the third was the RADER Lutheran Church near Timberville, VA (See page 56); the Fourth was the Immanuel Lutheran Church at RADER, Missouri
