The following research pieces are answers from Rudolph Grossner in Germany. You remember that in the previous newsletter I mentioned that I had send him 40 marks for copies of his research on the surname Rötter.

They are provided in interlinear fashion, first german then English. Both languages are given because I don't have any confidence in my translations. I do not have any training in the language and am using word-for-word translation methods and the computer program German Assistant.

example if you see "Bauer" it could be the surname or the profession of "Peasant" or "Farmer". "Baur" also means Peasant

"Reiter" means Knight, or Rider, or Equestrian, or Horseman, or Cavalryman, or Trooper

"Ritter" means Knight or Chevalier

"Rittmeister" is Calvary Captain

"Rademacher" is Wheelwright

"Räder" or "Raeder" means wheeled or Gear

"Roden" means root out

"Röte" is Red, "Röten" is dye Red, "Roter" is a Red (communist)

"Rotte" is a squad or two ships operating together

Hubbs-Frost and Allied Families is a genealogy written by Mrs. W.R. Hubbs (Ferol Frost Hubbs). The contents represent many hours of research that she later compiled into this book which is a benefit to her family, who may want to update it in following years.

The majority of this collection pertains to her research for Hubbs-Frost and Allied Families, but there are some personal files. FFH, as she referred to herself in the book, conducted research for people outside her family who asked for her help. This collection also contains many writings of FFH that she submitted to magazines or newspapers.

The research for the genealogy book includes marriage records, deeds, wills, correspondence, tombstones inscriptions, birth and death records, and much more. Copies of Hubbs-Frost and Allied Families can be found in The Congressional Library, Washington, D.C.; Lawson-McGhee Library, Knoxville, Tn.; and DAR Library, Washington, D.C. only to name to a few.

This series contains approximately 1000 letters addressed to Raymond Dexter Havens. The correspondence reflects the long, scholarly career of Havens, and the close, personal ties he maintained with students, colleagues, and friends. The letters span a period of over 30 years, and offer an insight into areas of academic life including teaching, writing, and publishing. Havens was a respected figure in the field of English Literature, and his advice and opinions were sought by others in that subject area. His recommendations of Hopkins students were important to colleagues who sought candidates for teaching positions throughout the United States. The intricacies of hiring practices are sometimes evident as in the letters of Roy Harvey Pearce.
