Immigrant information
Who are the immigrants that started
the various lines ? Where did they come from ? How did
they get here ? Where did the settle ?
1. Immigrants that we know.
I. Johann Adam Röder's widow Anna Maria
and her children ( at least 2).
II. Johann Caspar Röttor on the ship
Edinburg Log 13 Aug 1750.
2. Possible ancestors from P. William
Filby's Immigration lists
Most of the Ritter's are swiss, I think.
Have you checked out these possibilities as your immigrant
ancestor? They are by first name because last name spelling
of last names is inconsistent.

Name origination stories
How did the current spelling of the name become what it is
today ? What are the family customs that your ancestors have
practiced for generations? What did your parents and grand
parents tell you about the origins of their line ?
from Frances R. Longino, 5706 Interbay
Blvd, Tampa, FL 33611-4739
As with most family histories there is a
mixture of hard fact and reliable data along with
word-of-mouth tradition, as well as several gaps in the
lineage charts. In spite of problems, the general picture of
the various members is consistent with the family traits and
characteristics as we know them today,
This is not a proper history of the
Raders - I understand there are others doing this in a
scholarly way. This is simply to keep a promise to my mother
(Mrs. Lyell Rader) to do something with the information she
had collected from various sources. Some of this was
researched by Perry Rader, my Uncle Luke Rader, and data
from another Rader family in Pennsylvania whose relationship
has yet to be determined.
THE RADER NAME
The name is 'borrowed' - there is
considerable evidence for this in various records and
papers.
My Mother had the idea from Dad (Dr.Lyell
Rader) that we were of Jewish origin, although he could give
no reason for this except that he had a fairly large nose!
Mother would have been happy to confirm the connection
because her love for the Jews and her work for them covered
a span of many years following her conversion.
On the strength of this idea of Dad's,
she tried to crash a Rader Reunion in Brooklyn. After
talking and answering some questions at the entrance she was
very politely 'invited out'. She was given permission to
talk with the old Patriarch of the group however, and met
him at the agreed time.
This old man was well versed in our
history as well as his own. He told her that we were of the
Scots who had fled persecution under 'Bloody Mary', and had
taken refuge in Holland, There they dropped their name and
took the name of their trade. While this was the custom with
Jews, it was also common practice among all refugees,
and particularly among protestants and any anti-catholics .
This name was Rademacher, meaning
'wheel-maker' which was their trade in Scotland. The name
was probably carried until they went to England and Germany,
where the last part was dropped and they became Raders - by
accident - the Jewish name of Rader.
A part of this family went to Germany
where the spelling was Roeder, and Reader. Other spellings,
but obviously the same family turned up after emigrating to
America, to Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Through the diligent research of a number
of persons and the help of those who remained in that area,
We have more information about the family and its
distinguished citizens. A church there is 'Rader's Church'
and there is a stream named 'Rader's Run' and numerous Rader
families still live in the vicinity.
We know that one of the Raders left
Holland and went to England where he married and had three
sons; John, Anthony and Andrew. All of these sons came to
America and settled in Henrico County Virginia, the county
where Richmond is located. Some of their descendants moved
west and north in other Virginia counties. Our particular
line comes through these men -
- Adam Roeder (Rader Reader) I 1678-1729
- (wife Catherine Diebert)
- Adam II (Anna Barbara Bender)
1700-1773
- Matthias(wife Jessie
Painter.?) 1730-1792
-
George (I) (wife Sarah Dunlap) 1743-1813
-
George (II) (wife Jane McCoy) 1774-1864
-
William (wife Sarah Neale) 1800-
-
Andrew McCoy (wife Isabella McFarland) 1824-l896
Lineage disputes
They stole our ancestor, they belong on
our tree ? We don't know where to hang this line - any
suggestions ? there are more than 45 George Raders, 70 Mary
Raders, 80 William Raders, which one is which and can you
prove it ?
Computerized data base reports
The data base is growing and improving,
so what how can you get your ancestors out of it ? how about
a list of all of the people named "Mary" ? What ever you
want form the computer, we will try to get it to you.
The present condition of the Data Base
(6-6-91)
- Subjects on file 7945
- Marriages on file 2671
- places on file 2617
- explanitory text files 104
- footnotes on file 106
This means we have a lot of Related
people with few documents to back them up. I did not use
family histories as backup and that is where most of the
data has come from. I have two four drawer file cabinates
full of paper. These documents include church histories,
Family work sheets, and countless years of tireless research
by many people. I will list a few
- 1. Dr. William Rader
over 20 years of work;
-
- a. The book "The Descendants of Adam Rader" still
available from him.
-
- b. His additional notes for generations 7 thru 13
that would not fit in the book. He has kindly lent them
to me. I have just started entering them in the
computer.
-
- c. His library of related books, Issach Ritche,
Nobles, Goshenhoppen church, etc.
-
- d. His self published book "Record Book of the Rader
Lutheran Church Timberville, VA" (1762-1889) translated
from german by Christopher Henry Drogemuller.
- 2. Ralph Canselor
over 20 years of work: He has shared his notes with me
which are on computer disk. I printed them out, they are
about 1,000 pages of paper.
3. Elane
Easterly Busch and her desceased husband who
collected Rader Families, published "Rader Relatives
newsletter" and did most of the work on a book about the
"Descendants of George Rader"
4. Ed Fickie
many years of work with several notty problems solved
5. Arline Spivey
Carter and her book "Carter-Etter and Related
families"
6. Margaret
Rader who put me in touch with all of these
resources.
7. Mary Kegley
of Wytheville VA map of the lands of the early settlers and
many books on the area.
8. Parker Gay
and Dr. Charles P. Rader
who did much of the pioneer work.
9. Harry Roberts
for his histories of Greene County.
What can you get from the data base ?
We can create various books from the
computer at any time. We can create family group sheets,
pedigree charts, lists of individuals or marriages. The book
in the Genealogical format is the most data per page. The
less pages the less the cost, both printing and postage are
directly related to the number of pages.
One ounce of paper is is six 8 1/2 x 11
pages. These pages cost about 10 cents per immage to print
or 120 cents (double sided is 12 immages) plus 29 cents
postage. at $ 1.49 per 12 immages each immage costs .124
Dollars. I am computing the cost per page to lead into a
discussion of method of delivery.
I printed the current data base and found

If you have an IBM compatible computer I
can send the same book to you on 5 floppy disks at 30 cents
each or $ 1.50 plus postage.
If you want it on 16mm microfilm we can
make a master for $70 and each copy for $10. Assuming 10
people want it on film it would cost $70 plus $100 divided
by 10 or $ 17.
Books available
There are books and pamphlets currently
available. Do you know of one that we don't. Please let the
rest of us know about it and have a chance to buy one.
- 1. From Mutterstadt to Hosensack; the Story of
Some Descendants of Hans Adam Roeder of Mutterstadt,
Germany and Daniel C Roeder of Hosensack
- I am greatly interested in your plans for Rader
Ramblings. I have worked on my Grandfather's family,
Roeders of Lehigh Co, Pennsylvania.
- Before I send any quantity of material I'd like to
know more about what groups you are interested in. Is it
the descendants of Hans Adam and Anna Maria of Mutterstadt?
My research is into descendants of Michael and Heinrich,
the sons who settled in Lehigh and adjoining counties.
- Perhaps you have seen my book, From Mutterstadt to
Hosensack; the Story of Some Descendants of Hans Adam
Roeder of Mutterstadt, Germany and Daniel C Roeder of
Hosensack.
- I am sure you are familiar with William and June
Rader's much larger book which traces the family of the
brother who settled in Virginia.
- My book is about one segment of the descendants of
Michael. I now have completed more of these lines and am
working on descendants of the brother, Heinrich.
- Dorothy Tharpe 715-749-4094
- 73 East Terresa
- Roberts, Wi 54023
- This book is 67 pages spiral bound and available from
the author for $13.50 postpaid.

- 2. "Carter-Etter and Related Families written
by William J. Carter and Arliene Spivey Carter 2719
Wooldridge Drive, Austin, TX 78703 (512) 478-5347
- Authentic family histories can only be written when
the family descendants have consistently preserved the
memories of the past. The study of old official records is
fatiguing and time consuming, but these records need to be
fleshed out with old letters or personal remembrances.
- For the CARTER family there exists a series of letters
written by WILL and EMELINE which extend back more than
100 years. The same sort of thing appears in the TROWER
and SAFFELL families. W. T. (TAYLOR) CARTER now has the
old CARTER letters.
- The WILKINSON-WILKERSON memories were kept best by MR.
A. C. POTTER of Greenville, Missouri, who is surely now
deceased. (He was in his 90's when last seen by the writer
over 10 years ago.)
- The ETTER family spoke German in their homes and
churches until after 1832, but there are baptism records
and other old church records. The ETTERS usually seemed to
leave wills when they died, which are of great use to the
genealogists. For these reasons, ETTER is the only family
of the five reported here where the family can be traced
to their place of origin in Europe, in this case Canton
Bern in Switzerland. Almost all of the research work on
the ETTER FAMILY and the entire written presentation has
been done by ARLENE. A masterful job.
- The Carter-Etter book contains about 30 pages of The
Descendants of Casper Rader. The particular lineage is
Henry Rader of Dulaney, Greene Co., TN. This is the Henry
that died in the Union prison camp in Chicago during the
Civil War.
- 3. THE DESCENDANTS OF ADAM AND ANNA MARIA RöDER,
- JOHANN ADAM AND KATHARINA (TAUBER) RöDER
- FROM THE PALATINATE TO PENNSYLVANIA,
- THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
- By DR. WILLIAM A. and JUNE L. (HUDNUT) RADER
The genealogy begins with the birth ADAM ca 1645 and ANNA
MARIA in 1647 and their 2 children ROSINA and 2 ADAM,
followed by the birth in of 2 ADAM and CATHERINE (TAUBER'S)
7 children, the death of 2 ADAM in 1721 and his mother, ANNA
MARIA in 1723, in Mutterstadt, Germany. Next is the
migration of the CATHARINA (TAUBER), and her remaining 2
daughters and 3 sons to Pennsylvania in 1725. Then the story
of her first son, MICHAEL, who remained in PA, her second
son, ADAM who moved to near Timberville, VA in 1745 and the
third son Heinrich who also stayed in PA.
The story of MICHAEL'S children and grandchildren "moving
west", One of them, AARON, who moved to Crawford Co., OH in
1856.
The stories of three of 3 ADAM'S children who move to WV,
i.e. MICHAEL, GEORGE AND ANTHONY, and 3 ADAM'S grandson,
NOAH who moved to Pike Co., OH. Many of 4 ADAM'S descendants
still live in the Shenandoah Valley, VA while others live in
Hancock Co., and Crawford Co., OH, Indiana, Michigan and
surrounding states.
HENRICH'S son PETRUS (PETER) moved to Tennessee in about
1790 and some of his children and grandchildren moved to
Rader Missouri, others moved to indiana, Texas and the far
west.
The book contains 375 pages, 372 references, some 60
Family stories (indexed), with many other stories included
in the genealogy. There are approximately 6,000 names
indexed. Also listed are approximately 120 variations of the
Röder-Rader name. Hardcover 6x9 inches.
It is available from the author for $30.00 + $2.00
postage at,
4638 Bay Shore Rd., Sarasota FL, 34234-4526

Raders in Germany
Another source is the computerized system maintained by
the LDS Church in Salt Lake City. I did this extraction last
year to get a better idea of the possible places Raders were
found. This organization has microfilmed a portion of the
church records in Europe. They have loaded a portion of that
on the computer. They have further added their family work
sheets from individual research.
This source is available at most cities where the Mormons
have churches. It is a Personal computer based system. And
you don't have to be a member of their religion to use it.
Where do we find the Rader family. The L.D.S.
International Genealogical Index (IGI) has disks for both
Germany and Europe. The germany index, serching for "RODER"
yields the following information about where in Germany the
Raders were likily to be we find the following general
distribution prior to 1750.
- prussia 115
- baden 44
- bayern 18
- Wuerttemberg 12
- sachsen 9
- Hesse-Darmstat 3
- Mellrich 1
