General Notes:At age 10, Richard went to work in a cotton factory at
Stuyvesant Falls, and two years later, he went to Valatie with
his father where they worked in a cotton factory for four
years. At age18, Richard learned the trade of wagon-making,
having served a three-year apprenticeship under his uncle,
Gilbert Hermanse at Nassau, NY, then moved to Mill Run, MA
where he worked as a journeyman in his trade for eight months.
In 1871/2, Richard moved to Millerton, NY and worked for one
and one-half years with John Scutt.
On March 20, 1873, Richard purchased Andrew Fisk's
undertaking business in Millerton, Dutchess Co., NY and became
a leading undertaker in which capacity he continued until his
death.

Death of E.L. Valentine an Old Resident and Lumberman of the North Side.

Ellis L. Valentine died suddenly at his residence on Mill street Monday evening, oh hemorrhage of the lungs. He has been employed for several years in the grocery store of A. Ranum and after closing the store on a Monday evening, he went home (Mill street) uncommonly tired. He was preparing to retire when blood began to flow from his mouth and he soon expired.
Elis was 27 years of age
He was a son of John Valentine, who was a partner of Andrew Shepard, and built what is now the upper packet mill and died of injuries received in the mills.
He was well thought of by all who knew him and his obituary in the La Crosse Chronicle stated he was a son of John Valentine who had built the Upper Packet Mill after leaving the partnership of Andrew Shepard. He left a wife and two children with services from the North Side Presbyterian Church of which he had been a member since age 16.

Ellis married Rosa Bell Tuttle on 8 Oct 1884 in La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin. Rosa was born on 17 Feb 1865 in North La Crosse, WI.

General Notes:Byron's obituary dated 11 April 1946 in the La Crosse Tribune Newspaper stated that he was associated for many years in the grocery business in the northern part of La Crosse and had also served on the common council. His wife and children were all living in the Seattle area at the time of his death.

Death takes B.H. Valentine
Private funeral services for Byron Howard Valentine, 82, of 10704 53rd Ane. S., retired Seattle grocer, will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Columbia Funeral Home.
Mr. Valentine, who owned a grocery store in the Magnolia district from 1914 until his retirement from business in 1933, died Tuesday in a local hospital after a long illness.
He was born in LaCrosse, Wis., amd came to Seattle in 1908. Before opening his store, he worked for a local lumber company.
Mr. Valentine was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his widow,Effie; two daughters Mrs Leila Oberto and Mrs Merdeth Stevenson, both of Seattle; three sons, W.H. and John Valentine of Seattle, and C.B. Valentine, Oakland, Calif.; a brother Flave Valentine of La Crosse; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Internment will be in Evergreen Memorial park.

General Notes:Leila Oberto was born Leila Hope Valentine, daughter of Byron Howard Valentine and Effie Louise Fauver Valentine. She was born in Treemount (Portland), Oregon, November 26, 1907. She grew up in the Pacific Northwest, graduated from the University of Washington in 1929, married John Dion Oberto in 1931 and established a home in the Seattle area, while they raising their two children, Robert and Roseann, and later speding time with their five grandchildren. Their retirement years were spent in Tucson, Arizona having fun with friends. After contracting Parkinson's Disease some years ago, and losing her husband in 1981, Leila finally had to give up her home in Tucson. Bob & his wife, Judy, went to Arizona and brought her back to the Northwest, where they she could be close to them. Leila went home to be with the Lord this year - February 2, 2001. Her final resting place is Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial Funeral Home, along side of her beloved husband John. This site is now on the internet because of all the work she did on the family history, without which this site would not exist.

Leila married John Dion Oberto on 9 May 1931 in Quilicene, Washington. John was born on 4 Dec 1906 in New Castle, Washington and died on 27 Dec 1981 in Tucson, Arizona.

General Notes:Harriet's marriage record was found in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. She is buried at the cemetery in West Salem but no obituary was found for her. The 1900 census stated she had 8 children with 6 living. On that same census, Perry's occupation was listed as truck gardener.
