General Notes:John Valentine was a very early settler in Jackson County and a partner of Andrew Sheppard for over twenty-five years. They both lived in the ghost town of Boomville, which was in the vicinity of the area of the present day Rustic Mill Supper Club. After the death of his 1st wife, Chloe Gaffin, he moved to the Fifth Ward in La Crosse, Wisconsin and built the first frame house in that vicinity. In 1851, he built the mill later known as The Packet Company Mill. While working there in sawing lath bolts, he was struck by one of the sawed pieces and injured severely. The accident took place on a Friday. He was taken to his home and medical aid was summoned, but the injury proved to be fatal and on Sunday, he died. Both he and his son, Horace, lost their lives in that mill. He was a Mason since 1862 and his funeral took place at the Baptist Church. All of the mills in the Fifth Ward shut down and the funeral attendance was very large. John is buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Lot #518, Section 21. 63 M i. Flavius Lester Valentine was born on 30 Jul 1857 in La Cross, WI and died on 7 Jun 1952 in La Cross, WI.
General Notes:The death record said he was buried at Oak Grove cemetery in La Crosse. The informant was Frances Valentine. Flay had been working in the rubber mills for an occupation. His obituary in the La Crosse Tribune Newspaper dated, 9 June 1952 gave his address as 1733 Kane Street in La Crosse. There was also a photo. He was born in a house near the area now occupied by Copeland Park. He had lived in the northern part of the city his entire lifetime. He attended schools in La Crosse and at an early age became a lumberjack. He worked in the lumber industry until the last logs went down the river. He recalled often that in 1880, the year of the "big water", saw mills closed because of the flood. In the spring of that year, he and his brother took a canoe from the North Side down the river to the foot of Main Street to do an errand. The trip took 80 minutes, he often recalled.
Flay was employed at the La Crosse Rubber Mills for 25 years, retiring when he reached the age of 80 years. He held a variety of other jobs, including superintendent of the County Farm for six years and Burlington Railroad blacksmith for a similar period. He was the oldest member of North La Crosse Lodge 190, F. and A.M. He was a member of that order for 58 years. He was survived by his wife, the former Frances Bronson of Viroqua and several nephews and nieces. Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery

• Newspaper Article: 1948, La Crosse, La Crosse, Wisconsin. First Norm La Crosse School, Lumbering Among Memories of 91 year old Resident A 91 year old man, Flavius Valentine, lives in north L Crosse and recently recalled days when he went up 'to the first school in that part of this city. Valentine, whose home is at 1733 Kane street, remarked that school days now ant then won't even compare, either in teaching methods r subjects studied. The nonagenarian was born on July 30, 1857, in a house on the corner of what was then wall and mill streets. Mill street is now Caledonia street. The area itself was known as the village of North La Crosse, town of Campbell, and as yet had not been incorporated into the city of La Crosse lying to the south of this territory. First School In 1866 The first school was taught by Arthur MaGuire, an enterprising and civic minded man of 1866, and was located in MagGuire's home near the corner of St. James street and Copeland avenue. "When we entered school," Valentine said, "we immediately were handed a spelling book, When we had done pretty well with that we got an arithmetic book, then a volume on United States history. If we wanted to take further grammar or geography we could, but spelling was MaGuire's main point. "We studied out loud, and when wwe all got started it sounded like a mighty loud hive of bees. Those who didn't talk were handled in our teacher's own quick way. At his desk he kept a raw hide whip. We learned to study hard and fast." Recess time, then as now, was a period for great rejoicing among those who had been at extracting studies all morning or afternoon. "We would burst out of the one room study hall," Valwntine said, "and would we have lots of fun playing pullaway of leapfrog. As soon as school was out in the afternoon we would head for the river. Had no Special Halls "In my days, the river afforded everything a boy could ask for in the line of fun. We didn't have special halls built for us to play in. In the winter we skated, in the summer we swam." In 1870, when he was 13 years old, valentine quit school and started to work in a lathe mill. He worked 11 hours a day, earned 40 cents per day. He told how prosperous he felt when his pay on the following year, was raised to 50 cents per day. For 11 years he kept his position, he recalled, then he began work as a log skidder. He said he has covered almost every stream in Wisconsin as a lumberjack. His stories include how the Milwaukee railroad came to this part of the country in the fall of 1858, how freight was hauled on the river packets, and how the famous War Eagle, a river packet, burned at the dock in the autumn of 1868. General Notes:Chloe and her husband, John, lived in the town of Boomville which is now a ghost town. She is buried in what was at one time, quite a large cemetery there. The stones were never cared for in later years and when new roads were built, they took no care in preserving the historic site. In 1991, while recording the inscriptions of all the cemeteries in Jackson County, our group persuaded the Town of Albion to place a fence around the broken pieces of Chloe's stone. More than likely, her twin boys are also buried here, although there is no trace of their stone.
