DEATH TAKES AWAY FIGURE OF THE EARLY DAYS

San Francisco Disaster Leads to the End of Man Who helped Build the Northern Metropolis - Mcilvain. fifty-nine Years an Odd Fellow Passes here

Andrew J. McIlvain, one of the organizers of the pony express during the early days of California, died yesterday morning. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs William Barker, No 324 California Street.

He came to California in 1853, and had lived here since. His death is traceable to the hardships he suffered after the San Francisco earthquake. He was aged 79 years.
From his birthplace in Chambersburg, Pa., Soon after his journey across the plains he became interested in the organization of the famous mail service. He was well known by the intrepid men who rode the bronco mail carriers from town to town, and his enthusiasm did much to perfect the unique system.
From Sierra county he removed to San Jose in 1869. There he became well known as an architect and builder. He planned the Hotel Vendome and several other buildings in San Jose. He built the Phelan block and other large structures in San Francisco. Two years ago he removed from San Jose to San Francisco where he had acquired considerable property.
When the holocaust swept over the northern metropolis the holdings of McIlvain were swept away in a day. From a comfortable fortune, represented in several brick blocks, he had left only a pile of ruins.
Trampling with the fugitives who went to Golden Gate Park, McIlvain seriously sprained his ankle. He suffered much discomfort from exposure and contracted a severe cold. A few months after the catastrophe he came to Los Angeles. He never recovered from his experience.
An interesting event in the life of McIlvain was the celebration of his seventy-ninth birthday in this city on October 14, together with the thirtieth anniversary of the wedding of his daughter, Mrs. Barker. Many Angelenios who had known the pioneer in the early days were there.
McIlvain was a member of the Methodist Church, and was a prominent Odd Fellow, having been in the order for fifty-nine years. He was also a member of the Santa Clara County Pioneers' Society. Among the early settlers of California he was well known. He lived for many years in Nevada City.
McIlvain had retired from business twenty-six years ago. four years after his wife died. His niece, Frances McIlvain had been with him for the past seventeen years. He was, until his last ilness, always in robust health.
He leaves six children - George T., William M., and Andrew J., of San Francisco: Margaret E Barker of Los Angeles, Nellie S McIlvain of Washington and Ida M. McIlvain of San Jose.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1 o'clock at the undertaking parlors of overholtzer & Mills. Rev. Will A. Knighten will officiate. The remains will be cremated.

Andrew J. McIlvain a former contractor of San Jose died Tuesday at the home of his daughter in Los Angeles. His death is attributed to hardships he suffered after the San Francisco fire.

He was well and favorably known in this community and his death is greatly regretted by his old time friends and Aquaintances.

General Notes (Husband)

Gold was discovered in California in January of 1848
California became a state in 1850
Nevada city was part of Yuba county beginning in Feb of 1850
In 1850 all of the lots on Spring street were occupied
Nevada county was formed in 1851
There were several fires which totally destroyed Nevada City including one in 1858 which wiped out the courthouse records

It is probably that he was the original owner of the lot on Spring St in Nevada City California because there is no recorded land transaction for him it the existing records, yet was paying taxes on the land
