Fairfield Iowa Jan 5 - 16 My Dear Cousin I was very much
supprised to recieve a letter from one that had been lost to me
for so many years, yet Ellen I have never forgotten you I never
knew you as Mrs Thorton but when I read your letter I said it
is Ellen Rader for you spoke of your brothers + sisters + I
remembered their names although you was the one that I
rememberd the best.
Yes my dear cousin time has brought many changes since we
parted I don't just remember how many yrs it has been altho I
dont think the was over 10 yrs, I was 65 last Sep. I too have
come through a great deal of trouble + hardships yet I try not
to murmer. we raised 11 children but our 2 oldest daughters are
dead it has been 15 yrs since Stella our oldest died She was
married + left 2 children her husbands mother was Fanny Smith
you might have known her they lived not far from where you
lived
Cland C was our second child 42 is in the west he has been
gone about 9 yrs + we haven't herd from him for over a yr we
cant find him was in north fork memade last we herd, so you see
I can sympathise with you about your lost boy I do worry so
much about him

has always been so afflicted in so many ways + has always been
a great charge to me. yet we should be thankfil is no worse so
you see we raised 9 girls + 2 boys.
I see your children are equaly divided as many boys as
girls. I had a letter from my sister Sarah Klophonstein
yeasteday from Rialto Calif. telling me about such dreadful
floods + high winds done great damage + many lives lost of
course see so much in papers about it being so bad in many
places it done a great deal of damage where her youngest
daughter lives Think is San Bordena hope hope not so bad where
you are no sister Sarah never lived at Los Angles ure to have a
daughter live there but she is dead her add is just Rialto
Calif she has been in poor health for some time is just 10 yrs

through Ernest Alma is some place in Calif or was last herd it

1888 + Father in 65 - I always lived with mother at the old
home place never mooved in my life until 4 yrs ago when we came
to Fairfield, yes we often passed your old home when we went to
see the girls they both lived in that neighborhood near the
Union Church where I think you use to go sundy school since the
Dear girls both gone not often go that way. Try to go once a
yr to the cemetery where they are both laid if I am not
mistaken you have a little brother laid there too but oh how
much better the Dear ones thats gone before we too soon must
follow Oh may the Lord help us to be ready + waiting + Elen if
we never meet on earth may we meet in Heaven where parting is

At the 1850 and 1860 census they were living at Union twp,
Van Buren Co., IA. They moved to Iowa between 1843 and 1846.
They left Birmingham, IA 9 APR 1863 in a wagon train
consisting of 47 wagons. Four of the wagons belonged to the
Raders. The Rader Wagons were drawn by four mules. They made
a brief stay at Reese River, Nevada and at Virginia City. They
bought land in Oregon but sold it the next spring. They moved
to Santa Rosa, CA in 1864. They moved to Potter Valley in
1867.
Charles and Elizabeth were living at Calpella twp, Potter
Valley, Mendocino Co., CA in 1880. They are not listed on the
1900 CA soundex.

John married Elizabeth Ann Workman, daughter of Samuel P. Workman and Elizabeth Ockerman, on 12 Dec 1835 in Highland Co, OH.⁶ Elizabeth was born on 12 Dec 1818 in Bourbon Co, KY, died on 14 Feb 1885 in Little Shasta, Siskiyou Co, CA at age 66, and was buried in Little Shasta, Siskiyou Co, CA.
