General Notes: Elizabeth Rader died May 6, 1848 aged 75 years, 10 months + 25 days. There is considreable discussion of her maiden name, James C. Spraker writes the forrowing: Ms Worrell's compilation of marriages has a number of mistakes, including the name "Fry" used instead of "Ory". One source misread the name as "Pry", no doubt because of the rarity of the Ory name in this part of Virginia. Mrs Worrell, it appears, misinterpreted that first mispelling as a variant of the german "Pf" sound, thus erroneously rendering the name as "Fry" . As you can see, this error is a mistake in the second degree, a mispelling from an already mispelled secondary source. Since Calvin Ory himself signed his letter it would be absurd to believe that he did not know how to spell his own name

Apparently HENRY and CATHERINE started planning the move to Tennessee when in 1798 Henry and his wife Catherine sold 20 acres of land to John Erwin located on a branch of Reed Creek in Wythe County, Virginia (Wythe county Deed Book No. 2, page 277 dated 1798) HENRY, JOHN, JACOB, and PHILLIP, plus PETER ETTER and JOHN ETTER were making land purchases in Greene County from 1798 to 1804 when HENRY and CATHERINE actually made the move.

They sold three pieces of property in Wythe County in 1802 (DB 3, p. 325, p. 214, 125) and made a final sale 15 DEC 1815 which was probably his share of his father's estate. (DB 6, 373). He purchased land adjoining JACOB RADER and JOHN ETTER on the north side of Lick Creek. He sold 105 acres to same JOHN ETTER in 1809 and apparently moved to Timber Ridge area, where he was a highly successful farmer.

HENRY and CATHERINE were early if not original members of the Sinking Springs Lutheran Church. Their family page is number 7 in the church register, where five baptisms of their children are listed. They may have changed to another church as they do not appear in the communion lists after those early years.

Henry was in GREENE COUNTY, TENNESSEE as early as 1804 and possibly sooner. On September 26, 1804 Henry witnessed the land deed of his brother Phillip Rader and on November 14, 1805 he witnessed the
land deed of his brother Jacob Rader(GREENE COUNTY, TENNESSEE deed book number 7, pages 50 and 54 respectively). They settled on Lick Creek in the western part of Greene County. • Probate: 25 Sep 1851, , , Greene, Tennessee. 18 Henry's real estate property was sold at auction, as directed by his W ill, on September 25, 1851 [2]. The personal property of Henry was sold at public auction and the results recorded December 1, 1851 [7]. Henry's Will indicated that his heirs were to share equally from the p roceeds of his personal estate as directed by his Will. Henry's Will indicated that his daughter Mary Laughner had already received $123.25 (her son Daniel was not to receive anything according to the Will), son John had already received $62.00, daughter Elizabeth Bowers had reseived $132.80, daughter Rachel Baysinger had received $110.00, son Casper had received $38.00, daughter Catherine Smith had received $93.00, daughter Isabella Smith had received $95.00, son Henry to receive only $1.00. This meant that each of these heirs would have their proceeds reduced by these amounts. John Rader was born about 1769 in Lancaster County, Pa. He died on 3 Feb 1840 in Greene County, Tennessee.

He purchased lot 46 in Evansham in 1798. It was located on the south side of Main st., nine lots southwest of the Cross Street.

The record of the marriage of John and Etter, Mary is recorded in the "Annals of Southwest Virginia 1769-1800" by Lewis Preston Summers, part two of volumn one.

On May 24, 1800 John was living in Wythe County, Virginia and had one male in his household over 16 years of age and owned one horse and no slaves.

In 1800 John was listed as a subscriber for the building of the St. John's Lutheran Church in Wytheville, Virginia (See "Wythe Conuty Chapters" edited and published by James S. Presgraves).

In 1800 John and Mary sold land to John W. Doak located in Evansham, Virginia (Wythe county Deed Book No. 2, page 496 dated 1800). Evansham was the original name for Wytheville, Virgina.

On September 22, 1801 John purchased 200 acres of land in Greene County, Tennessee and listed his home as Wythe County, Virgina.

John and wife Mary sold 300 acres of land to Michael Cormany on 31 May 1803.

The Greene County tax list of 1812 indicated he owned 200 acres of land.

The court appointed John Rader guardian for Samuel, Anne, and Susanna Rader, orphans of William Rader, deceased, in 1805, and on November 15, 1809, Samuel was to be bound out to Christopher Oury to learn the trade of a taylor, and Annie was to be bound out to Christopher, son of Christopher Brown. These were his brother William Rader's children, as William had died about 1802.

The following is a brief history of the lives of John and Mary Rader who left their home in Wytheville, Virginia around 1800 and made their way to the valley of East Tennessee to raise their family and settle a new territory. John Rader and Mary Etter were married in Wythe County, Virginia on December 17, 1793. See the "Annals of Southwest Virginia" by Summers, page 1377. John Rader moved from Wythe County, Virginia to Greene County, Tennessee prior to 1801 according to a land deed for the purchase of 200 acres from Thomas Province located in Greene County (Greene County Deed Book volumn 24, page 186 dated September 22, 1801). This same 200 acres was later sold to John Lady in 1819 (Deed Book volumn 1, page 37 dated February 23, 1819). From 1809 to 1811 John was living in Captain Joseph Kirk's district on the waters of Lick Creek and owned 200 acres of land. By 1812 he had purchased 160 additional acres in Bulls Gap, Tennessee lying in Greene, Hawkins and Jefferson Counties. By 1829 he had sold the 200 acres and had only the 160 acres at Bulls Gap. In 1840 John was living in district number six and owned three separate pieces of land, one containing 50 acres, another 44 acres and one containing 31 acres.

On July 29, 1807 John Rader was appointed by the Greene County, Tennessee Court of Common Pleas to rear Daniel Etter, son of John and Mary Etter, and to teach him the trade of wagon maker (Page 237). On March 12, 1822 John signed a deed of trust to Merryman Payne for the 160 acres he owned lying in Greene, Hawkins and Jefferson Counties to secure a loan of ninety dollars and seventy cents from Deaderick and Sevier of Greeneville, Tennessee Again on November 6, 1835 John mortaged his property consisting of 50 acres located in Bulls Gap, Tennessee and 31 acres located on War Creek on the waters of Lick Creek. This property was used to secure a loan of $287.63 from Lewis Woolford of Wythe County, Virginia with John Etter acting as trustee for the benefit of Lewis Woolford (Greene County Deed Book volumn 18, page 63 dated November 6, 1835). Both John Rader and Lewis Woolford died before this last debt was repaid and the executors of the estate of Lewis Woolford sued the estate of John Rader to recover the $287.63 (Greene County, Tennessee Chancery Court volumn May 1825 to March 1836, page 481 dated 1842). John probably mortaged his property in 1835 to defray expenses in a lawsuit filed against him and James Guthrie on November 9, 1835 in Greene County, Tennessee Chancery Court (Chancery Court record dated November 9, 1835, page 279). The case involved the rightful ownership of 90 acres of land John possessed lying in Greene, Hawkins and Jefferson Counties. The case was heard on February 16, 1837 and resulted in John loosing ownership of the property, some of the same property he had mortgaged in 1835. A final disposition of the case was filed in the Greene County, Tennessee Deed Book numner 22, page 412 dated March 24, 1847. Also a complete history of the case was filed in Chancery Court dated February 17 1837, page 306 with a final disposition filed in Chancery Court dated September 14, 1837, volume May 1825 to March 1836, page 315.

John Rader died intestate in Greene County, Tennessee in August of 1840. Leland Davis was appointed by county court to act as administrator of his estate. The court also appointed William Willoughby, Thomas Jackson and Vincent Jackson as commissioners to set aside a portion of the estate left by John Rader to be used by his widow Mary Rader (Greene County, Tennessee County Court volumn January 1839 to December 1843,pages 159 and 167, dated September 7, 1840 and October 5, 1840 respectively) The personal estate of John Rader was sold at public auction on October 2 and 3 of 1840. His personal estate was sold for a total of $373.13. The settlement of John Rader's estate was a legal nightmare and was finally sorted out in Chancery Court in Greeneville, Tennessee on February 14, 1844. The final decree for this case can be found in Chancery Court record volumn June 1841 to June 1848, pages 455 through 457, dated June 1844. This final decree is valuable since it lists all the children of John and Mary Rader, the husbands of all his daughters and the location of each of his children. As a result of the decree, the remainder of John's land was sold at public auction on June 10, 1844 at the Greeneville Courthouse to William Drake and Anthony B. Keele for $67.75. Mary Rader, the wife of John Rader, died in 1848 and left a Will dated April 2, 1847. This Will was probated in Greene County, Tennessee on March 6, 1848 which is used as her death date since the exact date is not known. Mary gave most of her personal estate to her daughters; Sarah and Sophia were not mentioned. The remainder of her estate was sold at public auction on April 3, 1848 and is recorded in the Greene County, Tennessee Inventory of Estates, volumn June 1843 to March 1854, page 320. After John died Mary lived the remainder of her life with her oldest daughter Elizabeth.
