A Touch of History
The Botetourt County Historical Society is compiling information for a new book on Botetourt County
buildings entitled A Touch of History - Botetourt County Buildings Over 100 Years Old. It will feature
histories of homes, mills, barns, commercial buildings-any building or part of a building that is 100 or
more years old.
The Historical Society currently has nearly 200 build-ings, many of them residences, which' are being
researched for inclusion in the book. Others are welcome. If you own a building that is 100 or more
years old, contact the Historical Society at the address below for an information sheet.
In an effort to promote this project, which is expected to take more than a year to complete,
The Fincastle Herald will regularly feature some of the buildings that will be included in the book.
'Adam Rader's Saddle & Harness Shop Rt. 676, Brick Union Church Road, Troutville
Adam Rader was born in Germany on February 4,1761. He came to this country with his father and
at least two sisters about 1769. His father died before the ship arrived in Philadelphia and the ship's
captain, claiming that passage had not been paid, confis-cated several "large wooden chests" containing
 the family's belongings.
Adam and his sisters were bound out to different people, and Adam eventually ended up in Shenandoah
County where he learned the saddler's trade. Records indicate he enlisted in Capt. Hugh Stevenson's
Rifle-men, 1775-1776, during the Revolutionary War.
Adam Rader married Mary Hotzenpiller at Woodstock, Va. on January 10, 1789. In 1802, he sold his
property in Woodstock and bought property on the old Brick Union Church Road in Botetourt County,
about two miles north of Troutville. It was the main road in those days to Baltimore and Philadelphia
and would be strategic for business purposes. His saddle and harness shop, approxi-mately 16-1/2
feet by 20-1/2 feet, was built, circa 1801-1803, near their log house.
Leather works requires a good bit of water and there was a free-flowing spring beside the shop. The
original water trough in the basement is still there, as well as many shelves. The overflow from the
spring comes out of the east end of the building, as seen in the above photo. A reservoir tank built
in recent years furnishes water to a house nearby.
The main floor of the shop has two rooms and they have been left very much as they were when built.
The logs are in good condition with rafters showing. The surfaces inside are covered with whitewash
(lime). In the early days, the lime served as an insect repellent while making a clean, light surface.
Adam and Mary already had six children while living in Shenandoah County: Anna, Feb. 9, 1790;
Amelia, Aug. 12, 1791; Abraham, Jan. 14, 1793; George Washington, June 14,1797; Sally, July 6,1799;
and Samuel, April 11,1801. Three more were born in Botetourt County: Peggy, Jan. 22, 1803; David,
Oct. 18,1808; and Benjamin, Oct. 6,1813.
Adam Rader is buried on the hill north of the shop, along with several of his sons and grandchildren,
some of whom were killed in the Civil War.
Other owners of the building were Adam Rader; son, Samuel Rader; his daughter, Elizabeth and her
husband, Isaac Kessler; their son, George Gideon Kessler in 1871; his daughter, Ruby Kessler Painter,
1923; and her heirs sold to the present owner in 1985.
The present owner, Adam's great-great-great-grandson, John W. "Jack" Rader of Lee Highway North,
Troutville, plans to maintain and preserve this building in memory of his ancestors.

By Tradition Adam Rader was born in Germany and his
parents died at sea. He and his sisters were indentured to pay
for their passage. He ran away and became a saddle and harness
maker. He served in the Revolution from 1775 to 1777. He sold
his property in Woodstock, VA. and moved to Botetourt about
1802, where he spent the rest of his life. Their home was on
old Baltimore Road near Brick Union Lutheran Church of which
they were members.
Adam Rader served in the Revolution as a member of Capt.
Hugh Stephenson's Co. in 1775. Again enlisted in Capt
Shepard's Co. in 1776 and was drafted into another Co. Jan 1st
1777.

The DAR says it doesn't know which is which !

As a member of the DAR, I have access to the DAR Patriot Index; There is an Adam Rader b. 04 Feb 1761
d. 1817 Botetout Co., VA with wife Mary Hotzenbiller; Proof of service is needed for new applicatants for this line.

This conflicts with the information I have that states this Adam Rader and wife Mary Hotzenbiller who died 28 Feb 1825
Fairfield Co., OH.

According to The Official roster of the soldiers of the American Revolution buried in the state of Ohio; they list an
 Adam Rader, born 1764 Virginia, died April 14, 1847; buried in Kings Creek Cemetery, Champagin Co., OH;
From Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots also list this Adam Rader.

According to the 1820 Ohio census; only one Adam Rader, Monroe Co., OH, is listed that could be the age for this
Adam Rader; the 1830 and 1840 census for Ohio does not list any Adam Rader in Ohio that could be the age for this
Adam Rader.

Hopes this is some help

Janet
